What settings do you guys use when ripping DVDs to your hard drive to get top quality but still in a reasonable size. For example, I own seinfeld on DVD and want to put it on my hard drive. What settings should i set handbreak to so that it is compatible for appletv but without making it bigger than it needs to be. Obviously, seinfeld is an older show and the quality isnt exactly HD. when i click the appleTV selection before ripping with handbreak it automatically sets it to 2500 bit rate, is that making the file bigger than it needs to be? Is it taking up more space to have the same quality video??

I have an Apple TV and use the Apple TV setting and get around 1.5 - 2 GB per movie (smaller for TV shows 350MB) but use Universal for TV Shows as I watch TV shows on my iPhone more often than movies.

I'm HBing that particular show right now.

I started out just doing it using the Universal preset, but I trimmed back some size switching to (Universal-2passTurbo-ABR1800-Decomb). It saved me between 10-30 MBs per files (which isn't much), but when you figure in 9 seasons, it doesn't hurt. ;)

The quality looks good on my 52" Sammy, but remember to use "decomb." You'll glad you did. :)

Then you are either using hb 0.9.2, or 0.9.3 but have not updated your built in presets. AppleTV preset in 0.9.3 is a Constant Quality setting of 59%, which in general will yield a smaller file than the old 2500 kbps average bitrate which is as good as or better than the old preset.
