I don't understand why people use Handbrake over MacThe Ripper. I ripped Saving Private Ryan, a 3 hour movie, in about 45 minutes with MTR and it took almost 3 hours with handbrake. Does handbrake do something better but takes longer?

i use both. Handbrake is an all in one tool which rips a DVD and encodes it into another video format while MacTheRipper just rips the DVD so you can choose if you either burn or encode it.

It took over three hours because Handbrake takes the format of the DVD video and totally changes it so that you can stick it on an iPod etc. It's one of the most processor intensive things you can do but it's pretty damned convenient having and entire collection of movies in a relatively high quality on your hard drive. A feature film would take up somewhere between 1GB and 2GB generally.

MacTheRipper just makes an exact copy of the DVD onto your hard drive, it's not changing anything at all and you can still only play the video on your computer. It's great for copying DVDs but not so great for storing all your videos in one place as each Video_TS folder that is on your computer can take up to 7.5GB.

Mind you, Handbrake encoding from a MacTheRipper rip is much faster than directly from the DVD.

Same here. I use MacTheRipper to rip the disc, then feed it into Handbrake as I've noticed that some discs make Handbrake throw a fit. By ripping them to disc first Handbrake doesn't have anything to complain about.

I didnt notice any difference in FPS using HD vs DVD drive on my MacBook, iMac G5 and a 3.06 GHz iMac. Probably this is only true for Mac Pros...

I don't know why people take airplanes rather than cars. It took me 12 hours to taxi from New York to Philadelphia. I can drive that in my car in a fourth of the time!
