Handoff working on cellular network

The apple website claims that in order for calls to sync between ios devices and the mac, they need to be on the same wifi. However, in my case, it seems to work on cellular network. I get a call (3g network) and it rings on my MacBook (Yosemite) and ipad (ios8 beta 3).

Is this going to be extended to the final version as well, or is it just enabled because of the beta status?

Handoff requires BT 4.0/LE, while Continuity (what you're speaking of) requires WiFi.

Continuity is the answering of phone calls and texts on your Mac, whereas Handoff is breadth of other features.

I think that Continuity can also rely on BT 4.0/LE, in place of WiFi, when devices have BT 4.0/LE. This is probably what you are observing - Continuity not requiring WiFi, because yo have BT 4.0/LE devices.

Then again everything is in Beta and is subject to change.

weird thing is I was in town my phone called and i answered the call, but when i got home my iPad Air was still ringing and had been ringing for 6 hours at full volume....

Yep Continuity is what I meant. But the devices ring at home while i am at work, so it means that there is a cellular component to it as well.

Yet if you check out apple's website, handoff doesn't have iphones/ipads bluetooth icons showing. Strange isn't it?

If you notice, they remove carriers from the status bar of their iPhones in advertisement, or have been know to use different icons, ect.

If you notice, they remove carriers from the status bar of their iPhones in advertisement, or have been know to use different icons, ect.

Carrier is not relevant, but misinforming about active features especially for people who are into this kind of stuff is pretty strange if you ask me.

I have been having the same problem since DP3. I actually opened a Thread on this.

I think the problem is iCloud related. My iPhone sets up the link between it and my Mac Mini. I think when I leave the house my Mac Mini does not know that I left. A call comes in and via iCloud my Mac Mini gets notified (maybe push) and it then starts ringing. But when my iPhone answers the call from away the information does not get back to the Mac Mini so it continues to ring until I return.

Of course I am guessing about some of the details.


On the positive side:
Prior to DP3 when a call came in I could answer but could not hear the other person. I do not have that problem any more. Same for making out going calls.

I found disabling "iPhone Cellular Calls" in FaceTime on iPad and MacBook Air stopped them from receiving calls. It was driving crazy.
