Since last year I’ve been anxiously waiting to update my old 16Gb iPad Air to the new ‘Xified’ 12.9 Pro coming this year. Problem is, my otherwise perfectly fine Air has had a problem with charging originating at a loose (warn) Lightning port. I’ve tried all the ‘fixes’ I could find on the net. What used to be just an occasional annoyance has progressed to me having to fiddle around trying to find just the right position to hold the plug in place and hold it there while it slowly charges. Backed it up on my old laptop again just in case. I’m just hoping it can hang in there till maybe Spring, Summer or God forbid, Winter, till the new Pro’s come out.

There’s no way I could sell it as is and spending money on fixing an old worn iPad wouldn’t be smart. Thought about maybe spending the money on a Refirb for the mean time then exchange it later, which, I might end up being forced to do if I want to continue to use an iPad for my daily computing after this one can no longer be charged.

It got all the way down to 3% till I could get it to charge last time. Right now it’s at 100% while sitting still on a tabletop with the plug taped in place, not exactly user freindly but hey, that’s better than it being dead.

So, ya, hang in there!

Sorry to hear about your loose charging port in planing an upgrade to the next iPad model. But in my opinion, the choice is not the Pro or nothing at all. The current 5th generation is excellent and priced very reasonably compared to the current Pro line, and most probably the next Pro version as well.

I owned both the current Pro and 5th gen, and returned the Pro. I saw no huge improvement to justify the cost. But that’s a personal decision. I just wanted to add that the 5th gen and probably next 6th gen are nothing to sneeze at and worthy of consideration, especially coming from an Air 1.

Have you tried a new Lightning cable? Some of the MFi aftermarket cables might have a more snug fit.

Thanks, yup, I agree Richard, to be honest, a 5th gen would be fine for my usage. I’m just being a bit irrational after messing around with a friends 1st gen 12.9. Now I ‘must’ have a 12.9 and since Ive waited this long it might as well be the newest one.

Thanks, yup, tried a few cables that work on other devices but still have the same problem, but, have not tried an MFi cable. Is that a company?

Not a company. That's just the designation for Apple licensed cables, etc (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad).

Have you tried cleaning out the lightning port? My iPhones had a similar issue (cable had to be plugged in at the correct angle). I used the swing-out nail cleaner from a pair of nail clippers and a whole load of fluff and lint came out and the charging issue went away.

This. Its almost impossible for the port to wear out, you have dirt inside.

I have an iPad mini 2 and I am too ready to upgrade but not sure if I should just buy a 10.5 refurb for 500 with lte now and enjoy it for about 7 months. Or wait 7 months but be ready to pay 1k or more for the new 2018 Pro.

Thanks guys, I’ll give cleaning the port another try.

Weird but, I can get it to charge every time by following a little routine, place iPad on table, plug charging cord into port, lift up cord where it enters the port, plug charger into wall and let go of cord, wallah! It charges every time. Quite ridiculous but it should by me time while I await the 2018 X Pro.
