Since having upgraded to Catalina I have had this problem several times now: an app hangs after closing it, and I cannot force-kill it. In the process list on the console one process is left in brackets. Since MacOS cannot kill that process it cannot perform a clean shutdown either.

I have also seen this problem on somebody else's Mac running Catalina.

The problem does not seem to be related to a particular app. I have experienced this at least with Firefox and Mail. Just a wild guess: the process is not actually running anymore, it's just the OS failing to remove its entry and thereafter being unable to kill it because there actually isn't a process.

Anyway, this looks like an OS bug to me. Anyone shares the same experience?

Have you looked at "Active Monitor" to see what the hanging app is doing? You can try stopping (killing) it in Active Monitor. Also see what other apps are running that may be causing the problem.

Of course I tried to use Activity Monitor, but it did not help. The application seems to use no resources when this happens.

I haven't been able to successfully shut down my Mac Pro 7,1 since I got it. The apps close and then the machine just sits there. I have to force power off with the button. Not very elegant for a shiny new Mac Pro that I waited eagerly many years to get.

Catalina is a mess. It's the absolute worst thing about my new Mac Pro. It's so irritating that I'm actually tempted to return the computer while I'm in my 14-day return window.

Once more. And it does not not only happen with BetterTouchTool. No way to kill this process, need to do a force shutdown.

Yes, I've been having this problem too with many different apps, on top of app freeze-ups becoming much more common. I've had to force restart my MacBook Pro daily because of this. I've been tempted to downgrade to Mojave.

Having this problem with a 2011 Macbook Pro 10,1. Even after I force-quit all the hanging programs, I have to hold the power button down to shut it down. Anyone find a solution?

That's interesting. For me one of the last Catalina updates seems to have fixed the problem. I haven't run into it for quite some time now.

Well, the trouble with 10.15.3 but I have updated to 10.15.4 but I haven't shut it down yet. I have to see if the update worked
