Don't worry, I've done my research and I understand what the S.M.A.R.T. system is put in place for - and at least it's let me back things up first!

I don't know what triggered it, but I was first told about the issue when running games through bootcamp, strangely. No warning in OS X until I opened disk utility.

My question is, will apple replace my hard drive or even the whole computer under the one year limited warranty, as I don't have an applecare plan?

Also, can anyone please tell me about their experiences (particularly in UK) with sending the mac off, how long it takes etc? I know this is a common problem but wasn't really expecting it just 8 months after buying... I will get BAD withdrawal symptoms. Especially seeing as I need to get my graphics and art a-level work done over the summer holidays. :(

Thanks for your help :)

Apple should replace the disk as it's within the first year, with or without AppleCare. You should call Apple and schedule an appointment with one of their service providers. That will probably be the quickest solution.

You have to take it to a genius bar. You don't have applecare so apple won't organise to have it collected.

Why would they replace the whole computer? They'll just replace the hard drive.

These things happen. Be grateful your whole hard drive didn't die.

Make a genius bar appt and take it in, generally 2-3week turnaround depending on the store, backlog, and which genius you deal with.

thanks. being based in Peterborough (where the nearest apple store is at least 1.5 hours away) visiting a genius bar is not simply a case of "popping in", unfortunately. Will get a parent to ring apple support (have looked online now) and see where we can go from there. May have to schedule a couple of family shopping trips to Sheffield .

And I have actually heard of people who have taken their 6 month old mac to an apple store and had it completely replaced for some strange reason - I suppose it depends on what genius you get :)
