Hard drive of a MacPro as a main hard drive connected to a Mac Air 13”

I would like to use the hard drive of a Mac Pro as a main hard drive connected to a Mac Air 13”.

I’ve placed the hard drive into an external enclosure and connected to the laptop, the hard drive boots, the laptop sees the hard disk, the grey screen with Apple logo shows but then the hard drive stops spinning. The hard drive is connected to a power supply.

Am I expecting too much from the laptop? I'm using an USB cable to connect them.

What OS are you running on the external drive and from which MacPro? Also, what year is the laptop from?

The external drive runs Snow Leopard and it's from an ancient MacPro, maybe 2008 or 2009. The laptop runs El Captain and it's early 2015.

That Macbook Air is too new to boot Snow Leopard. Macs will typically not boot OS versions older than they originally shipped with.
