So I think my iMac has a hard drive problem..

I can hear it spinning, it sort of sounds like when you put a CD in the disk drive, it speeds up, stops for 1 seconds then speeds up for 2 then stops for 1, then speeds up for 2, ect.

its not loud but I can hear it sitting in front of the iMac.

How old is the iMac? Warranty still?

Have you restarted? Have you put in a CD and then ejected it. That way you can find out if it is the same noise. Are you noticing any issues with accessing data? ie. slow opening of files, etc.

I have restarted, I have put a CD in and im not noticing any issues with accessing data.

Also my iMac has been running a lot hotter then normal lately (particularly the HDD temp.)

and yes its still in warranty.

No issue with accessing data from the HD I assume?

Do you have your data backed up?

I would say make sure you are backed up and get that thing to an apple store or authorized repair center and have them check it out for free. The higher temps and concerning ( I assume you have been tracking temps for a while?)

I don't have a newer iMac- are there still fans in them and if so, could this be a fan noise or issue?

Also, is your computer up to date with any software (or possibly firmware updates)?
