Hard drive question..

I just got my MacBook over the weekend... CD2, 2GHz, 1GB RAM and an 80GB HDD

problem is...only 60GB of the HDD seems to be available, although under properties it says that it's an 80GB drive..whats going on?

1) An 80Gb drive is really 7xGb in OS terms (OS makers and hard drive makers count differently).

2) OSX and all the bundled apps take up quite a lot of space. Especially with all the localisations.

iMovie HD and GarageBand are particular culprits.... but unless you immediately need the space, I would not worry about it.

okay let me reiterate..

when i first booted up the computer, it said there was just over 55GB available... i know an 80GB drive is really around 75GB, where did my 20GB go? garageband and imovie HD can't be THAT big.

They're not so small....

The whole iLife install is around 4 gigs, I think. Tiger is about 4 more. There is probably about 2 gigs of bundled software (Office Trial, iWork Trial, games, etc). That's about half the space. The other half is probably primarily accounted for by the swap file (usually tries to claim around 4 gigs, I think) and the Spotlight index (not sure how big it is, but it's not small)....

But if you're not satisfied with that, get your terminal out and go digging...

Well, I have 4.57 GB of apps, the library folder (containing support files for the said apps) is 9.35 GB, and the system folder is 2.25 GB. As said, the space is mostly used by application support files. (Garageband loops, iDVD and iMovie video, etc).

The GarageBand loop alone (in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/) are 1.92Gb. Yes, nearly 2Gb just for the loops for GarageBand. The iMove themes are pretty huge too.

you can always re-install OSX, pick and choose which one you want, which one you don't want.

You can also just delete the files if space is a concern and you don't use them.

BTW, congrats on the Macbook. I'm loving my 2 week old MB.
