Is the 4GB actually 4GB for the ipod? Or is that 4GB for everything including the os? So it would actually be like 2 gb for ipod, e-mail etc?

4GB is for everything. I am not sure the free space on a new iphone but the os doesn't take 2GB.

If you go into Settings, General and About, it will show you the storage capacity. My 8GB iPhone shows 7.3GB capacity. I assume what is missing is being used by the OS.
