hard drive randomly not detected by mac pro

idk wha happened i posted another post about the issue just can't find it. but all the data ports on the mac work iv checked with my otherr 2 drives all 4 work fine but when i plug this drive in it doesn't even spin up so i can't boot into windows for gaming weird thing is i bought 2 of them in april and already 1 isn't being detected weird after just having a 3 hour long gaming session 30 minutes after rebooting into os x it unmounted itself and to this day is not detected

are these external drives?

some hard disk drives , especially "hybrid drives " like the st500lm000 use more power then usb can give. stock usb is only 5v @ 500 ma. which may be not enough to allow the drive spin up. in that situation , the drive should beep.

maybe you can put the drives in a thunderbolt or firewire enclosure? maybe you should put the drives in a different enclosure, or attach them directly to a computer's SATA port , so you can actual tests on the disks.

usb blocks smart error checking and reporting. if your hard disk produces a smart error and it needs to be thrown away, os x will never know about it, because it doesn't have the drives necessary to read the smart sensor of usb drives


maybe the hard disk requires usb 3 ? usb 3 has a mechanism where different products from different manufactures can talk to each other to give the device more then 5v @ 500 ma.

maybe you should get the free diagnostics from the hard disk manufacturer and run those tests.

yeah man i dunno what to tell you. backup , erase the drive, or run hard disk diagnostics from the company who made it.

if the drive mounts, you should be able to go to about this mac, click on system report , click on storage.

check the drive to see if says
S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified

if its verified then the drive supposedly should be okay. and maybe you just need to run Disk Utility / disk tests on it, or maybe disk warrior?


if smart status says anything else your drive is considered bad and it should be replaced.\

if the hard disk does not spin up while attached directly to the computer, then that hard disk is presumed to be defective and you should stop using it

the only time i ever noticed problems with hard disks not spinning up was usb enclosures. since your hard disk is connected internally, i don't know what else to suggest

yeah its weird it worked fine i had played some games on bootcamp earlier that day. i know all the data ports work as iv used my working drives in all 4 testing them. but this 1 drive just ejected itself and no longer spins up crazy as it was running flawless with no slowdowns or speed issues

The drive itself has probably died. Hopefully you have a backup of what is on it.

If you bought it new last month it's likely covered under warranty. I would look into that.

if the hard disk came with the computer then it would be covered under the computer's warranty. if the hard disk was purchased in a retail box, then you might have a 3 to 5 year warranty on the disk.

look up the serial # on the label of the hard disk. go to the manufacturers website with the serial number. and follow their directions to get a replacement disk drive under warranty


there going to need a failure code or a description of the problem

hopefully you will have a 1 to 5 year warranty on the disk

the warranty won't cover getting your data back , but it may save you money
