Hard Drive Space Issue

I've been using the public beta of El Capitan for sometime and have noticed a weird issue when I delete documents on my HDD. For example: I just deleted a 15GB folder that I don't use or need anymore and the HDD space didn't change what so ever. I should have gained 15GB but it just stayed the same? Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks.

I have also noticed that the El Capitan beta does not update the finder too well, sometimes a little slowly, sometimes not at all without a restart.
Did you empty the trash?

You should see the space available again after you restart your Mac.
Hopefully, this will be fixed before the final release.

I have emptied the trash and restarted my MacBook but hasn't changed. Hopefully they fix this issue.

Maybe you use Time Machine, but don't have your external backup drive attached? Internal backups may be retained, in that case, until you connect your backup drive, and give time machine an opportunity to clear out waiting backups.
(I see this happen sometimes, so might not apply to your situation, but you should consider it )

This is also happening to me. I have about 100GB of space missing. My 256GB is down to 26GB. I've checked all the usual sources (Library, Documents, iTunes, etc...) for anything large or out of the ordinary. I even used a disk app to check for any large files, but nothing. When I delete a folder or file, the free space stays the same.

Seems like a 10.11 bug...? This wasn't happening before the last update they pushed out.

Could this have any connection with File Vault? Are you using File Vault?

Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
Learn how to re-index a folder or an entire volume for Spotlight.

1. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
2. Click Spotlight.
3. Click the Privacy tab.
4. Drag a folder or an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.
5. If prompted for confirmation, click OK.
6. Remove the item or volume you just added to the list by clicking it and then clicking the minus ("-") button.
7. Close Spotlight preferences.

Spotlight will re-index the contents of the folder or volume.
