Hard Drive space not increasing when deleting items (OS X Lion)

I have had this problem since installing Lion. I even tried reinstalling Lion, did not fix the issue.

Say i have 80gig free space, i delete a 10gig file, it will show as still having only 80gig free, unless i go to force quit and re-launch finder the space wont re-appear as available.

I do empty trash just to be clear and also tried repair disk permission.

Your a star, the thing was taking up 45gig of my data.

One more quick question, since getting Lion Safari seems to get the spinning loading wheel a lot. Im running it with 4 gig ram and a 2 year old MBP.

Any ideas?

That was a great help to understanding what is happening.

If the deleted file(s) are stored on the local disk as part of a local Time Machine as well as on Time Machine, do the files which are on the local disk always remain there or are they deleted after a time?

Without running this command does Mac OS delete this thing or reduce it's size at any particular stage? I mean does disk space just continue to be gobbled forever?

The fact that this feature isn't really publicised makes it sort of silly and pointless - yes, I know there's "Versions" but to me that's different and only applies to frequently editable items like Pages, Textedit, Numbers and so on, not static things like... well, everything else on the system - Video's, Music, dmg's, iso's etc.

Yesterday, if I deleted a file from Lion and hadn't made a time machine backup of it I would have given up hope completely and walked away disappointed, probably saying I'll back up daily from now on. All the while the file would have been there.

If I was absolutely desperate and scraping the bottom of the barrel for answers I MIGHT come across the existence of the feature, but that's not the way it should work.
