I've noticed when I empty the trash, I don't reclaim any space... Anyone else have this problem? I've tried reinstalling, and it does the same thing...

I too have seen a drop in free hard space (says Finder and Disc Utility), to the dismay of my 60gb drive.

I'm guessing this might be due to local time machine snapshots? Time Machine now does backups on the local disk if you don't regularly back up on an external. This way, if you accidentally delete a file, you can restore it (does not help with hard drive failure). Try going into TM preferences and disabling the feature. (I don't have Lion, just read about it, so this is as much as I can help you)

i'm having the same issue.. doing a disk repair or disabling snapshots has no effect...

This is because of the TM local snapshots. Go to TM, click options, and remove the "create local snapshots" option. Your missing space will be back within 5 mins.

Very interesting! Even more interesting is the fact that I don't use Time Machine (set to off always) however by clicking on options I recovered about 300GB that I was missing!

Interesting indeed, that it's backing up my system even though Time Machine is set to off. However, how smart is this local backup, will it release some space if I decide to download something big when the space is running low? Or will it just keep going until I have nothing left?

The way it stands right now it appears that it will just eat your space like it did my! But again this is still "preview", not even beta yet.

I just had 10GB and was downloading a little more, and now I have 20GB left. Does this mean that this local backup is dynamic and gave back some space to me?
