Hello I was wondering something. I plan to get an external thunderbolt ssd when available for the fact I can get it cheaper for a smaller one. I was curious if I wanted to expand in hard drive space with a normal 7200 rpm hard drive would I need a thunderbolt drive also or would firewire be equal to the internal one because the hardrives just do not write that fast. Thanks

FW800 offers around 80MB/s in real world which is slower than what today's HDs offer. If TB enclosure doesn't cost much more than FW800 one, then go with that.
