I believe one of the reasons SSDs are currently more expensive than their HD counterparts is because the technology is much younger. HDD were once far more expensive going back 10-20 years. It doesn't take long for new tech to eventually reach a point where enough people are buying them to help the costs go down. We all have the early adopters to thank for that. Also, as the tech matures the R+D that goes into their evolution gets more developed and the more sales feed back into more R+D.
It would make your eyes water to see how much CD recorders cost when they first came out for the consumer market. Now they're practically a dime a dozen.
