How do you use your external hard drive since its not connected to your computer. Do you connect a USB cord to it or firewire or what? My itunes is getting rather big and i want to get an external drive for my music collection.

Firewire is quicker in transfer rates than USB 2.0 even it says 480MBps compared to 400MBps on firewire version 1.0

Firewire is more sunstained(sp?) rate than USB is in burst packets .. To change the Music location>Preferences> in iTunes Advanced tab>change location> copy the internal iTunes Music folder to the external drive and double check the Library size before you delete the internal (main) music folder .. Just keep the .xml file in internal drive .. Hope that helps

If an external hard drive isn't connected directly to your computer, and it's not a networkable solution, then you cannot use it.

Personally, I think firewire is a better (faster) option than USB. Plus I can boot from an external firewire drive, should I need to. Something you cannot do with USB2.0.

Ok so then can i just keep that external hard drive hooked up to my laptop and put everything on that external drive?

Depends on what you mean by "everything".

Can you run off it? I wouldn't suggest it unless it's an emergancy. If you mean music, yes you can put that on there.

However it doesn't sound like you have a back up solution.. If i were you, I'd get one quickly.
