What is wrong with Photos? Is there a trick to import raw photos taken with Sony A7 IV? Their format is .arw: uncompressed or compressed, doesn't make a difference to being able to import them.
Photos cannot show them, when GraphicConverter does but it's slow. RawPower has issues as well, wrote them about the issue but no answer yet
Thumbnails are shown by both apps but the full photo is not recognized or an alert tells me is damaged when it's not
System is BigSur

By chance and with the help of RawPower support we found that
raw cropped images are not seen by the app and I was using an ASP-C lens that automatically crops photos
If I use Full Frame lenses it doesn’t have any issue.
Changing lenses it accepts any RAW format I use, tried 3 different ones, compressed, uncompressed and lossless compressed.
The support guy told me to be aware of sport settings or cropped images and I recall that any ASP-C lens crops the image. Photos doesn't see the photo yet but it lets you edit the Raw blank one with RawPower extension , you save it and then you can edit with whatever other app extension or in Photos if you really need to.

Apple probably has not yet updated so that the RAW images for your A7 IV show up appropriately in Finder. It takes time for everybody to make the correct conversion possible. This always happens when a new camera is released. I'm dealing with the same situation with the A7R V, and am just shooting in .jpeg with that camera until Apple and DXO PhotoLab 6 get around to updating their systems so that I can shoot in RAW and edit my RAW images properly. I didn't think to check out RAW Power -- thanks for the mention!

I don't use Photos so that hasn't been a consideration in my workflow at all. I'm just waiting for my usual editing software to get caught up so that I can happily shoot in RAW and then go ahead and edit my RAW images in the editing program of my choice and then later handle and store the resulting edited images as I'm accustomed to doing.

Somewhere I saw that Adobe has already done the RAW conversion thing with regard to the A7R V (and I would bet also the A7 IV) in regard to its Photoshop and Lightroom programs, but since I don't use either of them that doesn't do me much good. DXO PhotoLab is promising "sometime in January...." and boy, am I ready!

Not using any Adobe program either.
I saw Monterey has already included my camera when I checked yesterday, maybe they will add yours too
"Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey"
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212821
I discovered Affinity Photo has no problem to import any RAW, cropped or not cropped.
But there is no browser that would be useful to pre select and delete .
RawPhotos does that and it's really helpful

I'm using Ventura, not Monterey..... all of my machines have been on Ventura since a week or so after it was released. I bought my most recent camera after that. What I'm really waiting for is for DXO PhotoLab 6 to support a module for the A7R V, since that is the program I use as my primary editing tool. They are promising this will happen in January, so I'm being patient.....

Just checked the list for digital camera RAW formats supported by Ventura, and mine is not yet. The A7R V was only released a couple of months ago and these things do take time.

The best answer is don't use Photos with Raw images. Only the processed ones.

I agree! Personally I don't use Photos for anything, never have, even way back in the early days when it was still called iPhoto. To me makes good sense to not attempt to use Photos with RAW images, but simply keep it for storing/sharing processed .jpg/.jpeg images instead. I'm sure it's fine and dandy for people who take snapshots with their iPhone who then immediately want to share those .jpegs or HEIFs with their family and friends, but for most who are more seriously involved with photography and who are shooting in RAW with a dedicated camera, Photos really does not fit the bill for any number of reasons. It actually was never meant to do so, which is why for a while Apple gave us Aperture. (I still miss Aperture, but I've moved on, just as most of us have.)

I've been using DXO PhotoLab for several years now and have really liked it. When Apple's Aperture was no longer being supported we all had a little grace period to still keep using it but we all knew that we needed to find something else for editing our images. Some people just went ahead and followed the crowd to Lightroom, while others, like me, checked out different programs and wound up frustrated in one way or another. I spent a fair amount of money and time on Capture One before reluctantly acknowledging that it just was not working for me, it was far more sophisticated and targeted to a different user group than I was in. Tried two or three more programs and found them lacking in one way or another and/or they were either much more than I needed or didn't provide enough of what I needed.

Somehow one day I stumbled upon DXO Photolab and it didn't take all that long before I said, "this is it! THIS is my editing program!" It allows me to keep my images where I want to keep them rather than forcing me into a catalog/DAM, and it is intuitive enough so that for someone who does pretty much the basics with regard to editing, it is ideal, providing me what I need and not throwing unwanted features and functions at me that I'd never use. I've slowly, carefully also ventured into exploring more in-depth editing and the program meets me where I am and then gently allows me to move forward at my own pace. I embraced DXO PhotoLab eagerly back then and am still happily using it now -- we're now into DXO PhotoLab 6, as they do a major update each year.

Glad that you tried DXO PhotoLab 6 and that you like it and have purchased it! Happy editing!

The only thing I'm missing, but maybe it's me not finding the right command, is
How do you get a straight line with the brush?
In other programs it's very easy: from the starting point, one click, keep shift down and click the end: voilà, a very easy straight line. Super great for repair. I checked the DXO forum where others were asking for the same functionality but couldn't find a solution.

Huh...... I guess I haven't had much occasion to do that so I have no idea if there is a command in there for that! I have found in the past that the DXO PhotoLab user guide isn't always that helpful, but I would think that if they do indeed include that function within the program there would be some mention of it. The fact that others are also inquiring about this does suggest that DXO doesn't offer it. They did just update the Repair and Clone functionality with PhotoLab 6, too (although frankly I haven't noticed all that much difference yet).

I find that Repair/Clone thingy to be a mixed bag, actually. Sometimes I use either the Repair or Clone function and it does exactly what I need and other times it (or I) makes a mess of it and I have to undo it all. This is one reason I keep Luminar AI still around, as that program has a dandy "erase" function, plus a separate cloning function which I find in some ways easier to use than PhotoLab's. Something else which Luminar AI offers is an easy intuitive way to do dodging and burning, and I have yet to find that on DXO. I think the lighting adjustment feature is supposed to manage that in some way but that has never been clear to me. I really should read the user guide!!!

OH, HAPPY DAY!!!! When I opened DXO PhotoLab 6 in order to edit a couple of images I had just shot, I was more than delighted to see that, yes, there was a new software update, and most importantly, that update included support for several new cameras, including my A7R V!!! YAY!!!! I immediately switched the camera from .jpeg format to RAW Uncompressed, which is my preferred shooting format and now she's good to go with that....

Yes, indeed! The last time I purchased a new camera I didn't;t have this issue since the camera had already been out several months before I was ready to buy one, and RAW support was available immediately, the day I brought home the camera and set it up. Earlier experiences, though, had warned me that when I bought A7R V that there would be a lag time until I could shoot in RAW and immediately process it, so this was not unexpected.

There are other Sony users on here but I'm not sure if any of them also uses DXO PhotoLab 6 or not, or if they have purchased the R7R V yet. There are two or three of us on the Sony discussion forum with the A7R V so I've posted the good news there as well.
