Hardcoding subtitles

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but I've been searching, and haven't been able to find an answer for exactly what I'm looking for.

I have two movie files (Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill) and both are missing subtitles for the non-English parts. I downloaded the .srt files for the non-english parts, and now I would like to convert the movie files to apple tv format while hard-coding the subtitles. (Basically I would like the subtitles burned into the movie and not have the option of removing them as seen in the theatrical versions of the movie).

I have tried using handbrake and other programs, but they all just embed the subtitles in the file and not actually burn them into the movie.

Handbrake can only pass-through SRT subs, they can't be burnt in. If the two movies came from a source like DVD or Blu-Ray then why not use the subs from the original disk.

Handbrake will on the other hand burn in SSA subs, how well it works I don't know. So you could try finding the subs in SSA format or convert your SRT subs to SSA.

Have you tried the "default" setting for srt subtitles in Handbrake? This would not burn in the subtitles but would make them enabled by default on most devices, so you wouldn't need to do anything but start up your movie. Sort of a compromise solution that won't require you to seek out or create a vobsub or similar.
