My harddrive has completey failed on my aging powerbook, but beginning to search for a replacement it seems that a lot of new harddrives come with a three year warranty.

Would this sort of warranty cover the hard drive that came in my powerbook about 2 years 7 months ago? If not I will just buy a new one and replace it but thought I would check if anyone has called in a manufacturer specific warranty rather than the applecare. I did not purchase extended Applecare obviously, but prices as they are now a hard drive is quite a bit cheaper than that anyway.

Obviously it would depend on the manufacturer which leads me to my next issue, confirming the manufacturer of the hard drive which can't boot or be mounted in target mode. I think I recall it being Hitachi but if anyone suggest how to confirm this it would be much appreciated. (my powerbook is a 1.33 purchased in about June 2004)

Thanks for any suggestions

Those are the warranties on retail drives sold directly as a stand alone product. They do not apply to the drive you bought as part of your Powerbook. It is covered by Apple. If you bought Applecare you are in luck. Otherwise I'd say no chance.

The 3 year warranty on drives is making a comeback. It was only a couple of years ago that the manufacturers were slashing them to one to cut costs...
