Hardshell Cases necessary?

Are the hardshell cases, like Speck or Techshell, were necessary or even useful?

A strong skin or sticker (invissheild, macstyle) should protect the macbook from scratches on an iffy surface (which could easily be solved by putting a text book or even a blanket under). Unless the Macbook, which I'm about to purchase, is really easily damaged, I don't see how anyone would need a hardcase...a notebook is about portability but not Australian outback durability.

I guess I'll stop buy the Apple store and test this out....

I was just at the Apple store today and I personally couldn't decide between the sleeve and the speck case, I decided to wait on the purchase until I'm decided. The way I look at it, in a drop both situations probably will leave you with a dead mac, with a bump both would probably protect.

I've got the clear speck hard case. I like it, it protects my MBP from the everyday scuffs and scratches that all laptops seem to acquire over time. Not a bad investment.

The only downside is that taking the case off requires a steady hand and a fine touch.

I've got a speck case also and I'm pretty happy with it. Its also nice to be able to put your MB on your lap.

Hard shell vs no shell

I used to have a Speck See Thru but eventually got rid of it. I did find that it protected my MacBook from scratches, but flaws in it's design made me get rid of it. I understand how someone said that it's a laptop and not made for the Australian Outback, and I agree, but I've taken my laptop out on my deck to use it and did not see the sand that my kid threw on the table, put my MacBook down and the bottom got all scratched.

The reason I got rid of the Speck See Thru us that I've has instances where dirt/sand has gotten into the space between the opening of the See Thru and my MacBook.

Since then I've actually purchased a new MacBook, gave my kid my scratched one, and bought a 15" TechShell. The quality of the TechShell was clearly different than the SeeThru. For anyone who does want the protection on the MacBook I highly recommend this product. I even bought a second one for my daughter. They make a pink one, while not my color, looks great my my daughters MacBook.

I've got the invisibleshield on my ipod nano 1stgen, and I regret it. Sure there's no scratches, but I cant enjoy the unscratched beauty anyway, because theres this condom on it.

i'd rather risk scratches and use the thing more directly.

Is the techshell material stronger?......what makes it better quality. I have a speck case and want a case that does not have the contours.

I bought a techshell, and did not like it on my macbook, it also scratched the side of my macbook, removed it and sold it

I have the speck blue case for my white macbook. I like it so far. I haven't really noticed any scractches to my macbook per se but then again I don't really lug the thing around a lot but right now I just like the blue look.
