Trying to fix a Mac Pro (A1481) received in ‘non-operative’ condition:
  • The input panel lights up when plugged in: [never shows video]
  • The input panel lights up when Power pressed: [never shows video]
  • Don't think the fan is spinning
  • Unit shuts down after about 20 seconds
  • Reset PRAM (no effect)
  • Unit never chimes
  • NO VIDEO after trying to get in to verbose Mode
  • Replaced RAM (no change)
  • Disassembled unit to inspect for issues (couldn't find any)

Haven't changed the CPU but have a CPU in stock to swap/test and it seems like a reasonable possibility...

PARTS I DON'T HAVE to TEST / REPLACE
(not in stock):
GPUs, CPU / RAM PCB, Power Supply

Ideas ...?

Start by resetting the real time clock - there is a little button under DIMMS 1 and 2, press the button for more than 1 second. Also replacing the battery may be needed.

Depends on if there was an attempt to swap out the CPU, then a botched upgrade would be my top pick and might be an easy fix. Faulty GPU or faulty power supply would seem the most likely candidates in any other case.
