Grey rolls down top to bottom and this text appears (in a few other languages too):

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."

Googling this message led me to a forum suggesting it might be the RAM. However, the Apple Hardware Test found no problems and neither did repairing permissions, nor repairing the hard disk.

Since the problem first happened, it has started occurring closer and closer to startup, so I assumed some component was getting unreliable and was failing as the computer warmed up.

Yet the iMac G5 iSight still works fine from the Install DVD when we repeat the Apple Hardware Test, and use the Disk Utility to run the Repair Permissions and Repair Disk procedures, none of which find any problems!

Because it has happens ever closer to start up from the HD, I had thought it was heat related, but I've run it for over an hour from the Install DVD . Could the restart message be triggered by a software error? Or could it be a malfunctioning failsafe mechanism that should protect the computer if it's overheating, becoming increasingly oversensitive?
