So with 13.4.x I noticed my iPad Pro 2018 (12.9’’) heating up more than with previous iPadOS versions.

Did 13.5 fix things like heat and battery drain for you?

I didn’t have heating issues with the previous version, but 13.5 has both my iPad and iPhone burning up.

No. I'm convinced certain bugs are never going to be resolved. I haven't experienced most of the bugs people on this forum have complained about but the ones I have been exposed to have never been fixed in any of the updates since iPadOS has been released.

So far 13.5 seems good on my iPad Pro 2017, SE 2020, and SE 1.

SE1 and iPad were on 13.3 previously, 13.4 for SE2020.

is your ipad heating up only over the left side or over all surface?

No.
I jumped to 13.5 (beta initially) to plug the Mail security issue. Have not really seen much of a change excluding the ongoing bugs. Since 13.5 was pretty much a "meh", I am currently on 13.6 PB on my IPP leaving 13.5 behind.

Even with Background App Refresh turned off the Settings app reports serious overnight battery drain on my wi-fi only iPad Pro 10.5. Apps such as the UK Guardian Newspaper app are reported as running in the background for 60 minutes of every hour overnight unless I swipe the app away before bedtime. So I can lose about 2% per hour.
