Hey, I wanted to get at you before one of the more belligerent posters writes and says something nasty to you in an effort to show how 'up' on tech they are. Vudu is quite old actually and has been around for not several years but atleast 1 or so. It's HD content (versus standard definition which is most download to rent or own variety like :apple:TV, Xbox, PS3 and so on) and seems to get some strong recommendations via a few of my tech friends.

That said, anything is possible but it's doubtful imo that it will replace Apple. There are many reasons but 3 simple ones are:

* distribution: Vudu is online or select retailers--while :apple:TV is in Best Buy, Apple stores and was in circuit and the Sam's club stores. Not to mention Apple.com is far more trafficked a website as is Amazon than Vudu.com--in consumer products distribution is 60% of the battle and Vudu just ain't got it.

* efficiency: Apple has iTunes which with songs, podcasts and movie aggregation alone--loading an :apple:TV for content whenever you want is simply easy for most average Americans. Vudu is no slouch since they do one thing, movies, but that said---seems highly unlikely that movie fans who are wanting to watch a film or scratch a particular genre itch are going to scratch it with a Vudu as opposed to an :apple:TV. Not saying, Vudu doesn't get good movies and have it in good quality but the ease of finding content--any kind on Apple's machine is 10x better.

* HD movies are great but versatility is king-- when Apple has the amount of iPods sitting out there (20+M this quarter alone) and the fact that most movies (not HD not yet) can be ported between Mac PC's to iPods to :apple:TV's then the value of the versatility is king. While I think the :apple:TV unit is way overpriced--I cannot deny that renting a standard definition Hellboy 2, piping it to my iPod if I'm traveling and finishing it off on my :apple:TV is just damn slick and well worth the $3.99 I pay (which I don't like paying--digital movies should be far less than physical) as opposed to the high quality Vudu cost which can only be viewed on the TV.

That's just my opinion but one thing posters on this site forget is that the real bulk of America is not tech savvy, is not making $100K yearly and is not seeking the 'best' picture and sound--they work standard jobs and just want quality but efficient and affordable entertainment options and :apple:TV for the most part (the HDCP, not supporting DVI and the movie costs is nothing but BS crap) gets that right. So-no big future for Vudu.

I think that it is worth a look.

But it probably won't meet my own expectations. Currently i am using a stand alone Blu-Ray player and a Popcorn Hour (www.popcornhour.com) which - except for the sound - totally fascinates me. I bought an Apple TV last year but replaced it with the Popcorn Hour NMT A-110 some months ago, by reason of it's missing features (e.g. Matroska 1080p).

I guess I have some questions after reviewing VUDU. First of all, since I can't burn the movies I purchased, and I can't transfer them to the computer, put them on my iphone/ipod, or other storage, what happens to all those movies I bought on the vudu if it dies? Also, can I transfer a movie from VUDU to VUDU (lets say from the Living room to the bedroom)?

I don't know about the answers to those, but that is what is important to me, and appletv in the house (multiple) is the solution I like the best..

Any thoughts?

I agree there is something else out there than Blu-Ray (damn Sony f'ed up that 1). Everyone is going streaming instead of Blu-Ray, it is just too damned expensive, and nobody can make money off the technology because of Sony. Sony outpriced themselfs out of the market. Oh well there goes another Sony flop, im starting to see a pattern.

Never heard of it, sounds interesting.

Anything sounds more interesting than the AppleTV these days, let's face it. :(

Hacked into mine almost the moment I purchased it, as many of us have. However, Boxee has opened up a whole new can of worms. It's like I've got an entire new gadget here. :)

boxee

just loaded boxee on my :apple:TV last night and it's awesome. Nicey adds the functionality the device should have in the first place. Was thinking of getting the roku box until I did boxee....

I don't know if they priced them selves out. Hell you can pick up a player for $149. Movies are coming down in price also. For some reason I don't think blu-ray is going down anytime soon. The Dark Knight sold 600,000 units of blu-ray it's first day out.

Domestically, 'The Dark Knight' sold over 1 million Blu-ray units in its first week, including the blockbuster 600,000 first-day sales of the title reported earlier this week.
