Has anybody contacted Mac about how poorly Mobileme functions? I would think a subscriber based service would need to react to such feedbac (but apparently it's been years).

My subscription is going to renew but I may cancel. Dropbox is filling the role just fine.

I always pictured clicking a buttom in iPhoto that just backs up my library to mobile me.

Guess not.

my 60 day trial ended on the 3rd... and i actually really loved mobile me
but for $99  i thought i would give google a try

it was a b%$h to set-up but i really think google is more than enough for my needs and drop-box is sensational... no more carrying around usb drives

apple should release MM free with 2GB option, then charge a small fee for larger storage solution and others benefits..

i would not renew if i was you, MM is getting a big upheaval soon

You can do that today, check your options in iPhoto, iMovie, etc. And you can synch files automatically to iDisk and you can access your pictures and files from any computer, on any platform from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. BTW, you can also automatically synch and back up your music, movies, documents and just about any other content from your hard drive within the space limits. Either manually or fully automatic. My iDisk is a mounted drive on my desktop, I drag and drop to/from it all the time and use the Apple Back Up utility to automatically synch other files, the MM synch tool takes care of the rest all seamlessly and automatic.

Honestly, $99 aside, I do not see where MM loses to Dropbox or Google here. Plus you are getting 20 gb of storage along with email and calendar syncs. I am struggling to understand why so many people say Dropbox is better, other than the 2 gig free part.

I think a lot of the people complain about MM just don't know how to use its features. Of course, if all you need is less than 2 gig of storage, then Dropbox wins hands down, but when you want more, MM isn't really a terrible option. It would be a shame if they stripped it and dumbed it down to cut costs and make it a file only repository, removing all the great OS and app integration.

Thanks for the response! I knew this had to exist and I will look into it. I think I need more than 20 GB and may need to upgrade then.

I think Dropbox wins b/c you upload the files by dragging and dropping. You do this if you are on a PC or a Mac. I can also still log on using IE6 to pull files at work (which mobileme is not doing).

It just seems to much easier to share files with Dropbox as well. Example - for my parents who have a PC, they double click the dropbox folder I placed on their desktop and the files are just there. No logging into an IE interface etc....

I am not knocking Dropbox because I just don't know enough about it, but you can drag and drop with MM using Windows or OS X. I do it everyday at work where we use XP.

As for sharing files, I have the iDisk app on my Touch, IPad and my sons Macbook and we all share files across the devices. Same can be said for outside people, you just need to set the access rights and permissions.

I'm going to look into MobileMe to perform my backups tonight. I think you're right that I just haven't looked at it enough yet.

Do you know the coast to upgrade to 40GB? Right now I'm on IE6 at work and mobileme won't let me log in. (thats another plus to dropbox - they do)

Yes IE6 is not supported, we use that at work so I have to have a renegade copy of Firefox running to get to MM. I am not sure how much the upgrade to 40 gb is to be honest.

Also, I was wrong, you cannot drag and drop within xp, you need to use the MM interface and upload files, so that may be a plus on the Dropbox side if you do a lot of file manipulation between platforms.

The drag and drop is a tremendous upside. I have friends who have MobileMe and never use it b/c the uploading is slow and you are limited in the GB you can upload in one chunk. That is pretty poor.

Again, you CAN drag and drop with MM on a Mac, but not Windows. The 1 gb file size limit, while not being an issue for me yet was a bit concerning too, not sure why they have that.

Understood - it works on Mac but not PC. This is a problem for some.

Also - I have 19GB of photos in my iPhoto library. While I would love to use MobileMe, the 2gb creates a problem and a longer time to back up. 60GB is also kind of weak (with the upgrade).

May have to just go with Dropbox. Sometimes the first out of the gate with functionality wins. Apple is not out of the gate yet with ease of use.

Co-workers also use it and think it is unusable b/c of the 2GB limit in upload.
