Has anyone actually camped for an Apple product before?

Nope.
And I don't plan to do it with the iPhone, either. I am picking it up on Saturday actually, because I am leaving for Maui tonight at 12:30 and leaving there June 29, at 4:30... (unfortunate timing, I know) I live in Las Vegas, where the only thing more plentiful than casinos are the number of AT&T stores. More than 4, I think. Not to mention there can't be a bunch of people willing to drop $600+ on a phone the day it comes out, unlike all of us Macheads.

I guess its depending on the area. People were lined up for a long time waiting for the NYC store to open. I don't know how long they were there.
From what I understand, most of the time the stores don't care its the land lords or local police that have a problem with it. For example, the town I was in when I camped for the PS3. All stores had campers, except Circuit City. The land lord(s) would not allow it, they would drive by and threaten to have people arrested if they didn't leave. The local police came to Best Buy where I was camped and warned people to behave. He said many times that if he had to come back because we were making trouble, that we were in some very serious ****.
I had a friend camped out in another state, he said the local police came through the last night and told everyone to leave. If you asked why, you were pulled aside and harassed for being a nuisance.
Camping leads to problems, and every product release that has campers gets worse and worse. When I was camped for the PS3, we had someone come through the last night and start throwing eggs at us. Needless to say, we chased the bastards and _almost_ caught them. With 15+ people chasing them by foot and car, it was a good thing we didn't catch them or they might have ended up in the hospital or worse. Not because we had that original plan, but with the adrenaline pumping ... dumb things happen.

I am thinking Pasadena may be the ideal spot as I am sure the cops won't allow campers. Pasadena police = bored -> no crime.

I think I will be camping in Pasadena as well. The police are always around (even when you wish they weren't) and the apple and cingular store are both less than a block away.

I worked at an Apple store when it opened, and for the opening several people camped out. I've actually participated in a HUGE camp-out at a local IKEA. But I can't recall any product released by Apple that has spawned the "camping" reaction, ever.
I just wonder if they'll allow it since they've placed so many restrictions so far to try and make it as fair as possible (i.e. no pre-orders, all coming out on the same day/time, closing of the store to kick out anyone waiting around for it, limit to the number you can buy, contracts to dissuade you from scalping, etc.)
I would imagine that Apple doesn't want to see iPhone related crime/fiascos like with the PS3. No guarantees on the ATT stores tho.

Well back when the Mac Mini first released I got out to the Columbus, OH apple store about an hour early. It was sleeting, snowing, and bleh out yet there were still 20 people in line already. I'm really amazed there hasn't been a report of someone camping yet. Of course apple may have pitt bulls after hours to keep people away too so who knows.

I was one of the many who camped for the PS3, and me and my team had to talk to mall security and the store manger of K-mart to get the green light on things.
The problem i see with camping at a apple store is the fact that I live in NYC. The 5th ave location gets LOTS of surrounding foot traffic, and is considered a prominent shopping/tourist area, so I don't think the NYPD would be cool with a bunch of people sitting outside from the night before.

I'm pretty sure Pasadena has laws against that. You're not even allowed to park your car on the street overnight unless you have a permit.
Pasadena ordinances are pretty iron fisted, but I guess that's what makes it nice and pretty compared to the LA city limits.
Spent the night in front of the local Apple Store opening day. Which just happen to be the same day as the original iPod went on sale.
