Has anyone been penalized for tethering?

So, before I got my iPhone, I signed up for a Moto V3x. I'd like to use it to tether to my PowerBook. I'm reading online all these warnings that I might get charged (I'm well aware that it's AT&T's right to do this). My question is: has anyone here been charged? Do you know anyone who got charged? A "no" is as good as a "yes".

And, if you don't mind, any resources for how to tether the Moto V3x to my PB?

I would think that howardforums.com would be a better place to ask this questions, as it really doesn't apply to iphones, macs or anything apple related.....

Perhaps....

I don't think it has "nothing" to do with iPhones and Macs. I'm asking a question about the plan that you have to get in order to use an iPhone, and the usage of that plan (albeit with another phone in a specific situation) on a Mac computer.

And, I checked HowardForums, to no avail. If you have a link to a thread there that answers the question, I'd be appreciative if you'd provide it.

I think he was saying it doesn't apply because you can't tether your iPhone to a computer to use as a modem....

Edit: But if i had actually read your last post, i would have noticed that you don't plan to use the iphone but rather the iphone plan ...

I think it might be possible with wi-fi...but in a very hacky way.

No tethering is facilitated on the iPhone as standard, despite bluetooth on the device. Shame really but then again the logic is, why would you? You can do a lot of it adequately enough on the iphone....

You can't tether an iPhone with Bluetooth or wifi. There may be a way to hack it but it can't be done as a stock option.

If you tether a phone for data and use it sparingly you won't have a problem with ATT.

Yeah. I put the sim in my samsung sync a few times. As long as you put in the right user name and password you'll be OK.

I have tethered using the iPhone SIM in my Blackjack since week one. I have not been charged for using 3G data to date. I do however, get a jumbled alphanumeric text from ATT every time I do. There are previous discussions within the macrumors forum on this topic.

Just like the post above, I have not been charged for the data used while tethered. It seems to fall under the "unlimited data" aspect of the AT&T iPhone plan.

I don't know if this affects your iPhone decision, but I used to tether my PBG4 all the time right up until I got my iPhone. I was on Verizon before, so tethering was great, with a fast, super reliable connection. It was awesome, and I miss it.... on my Moto phone, but I've found since I got the iPhone, I really don't use my lappy outside of work at all anymore. I have never had the need to tether anymore with the iPhone. I have my maps, and my email, and the net... everything that I used to do on my PB with a tether, I now do with a little device that slips into my pocket. Seriously, if you are the type of person that tethers a PB/MB... then the iPhone is the perfect fit for you.

I've got an iPhone. I think I kind of want to tether the V3x just for the fun of it, to see if I can do it, and for the rare occasion when such a thing will come in handy. You're right, though, I use my iPhone a lot and probably won't "need" to tether all that much.
