I'm looking to buy a processor upgrade for my 450 Mhz Power Mac G4. I was wondering if anybody who has bought one could tell me their experiences and maybe some suggestions to what kind I should buy. I'm thinking I need one if I wanna keep up with today's applications. I mean converting video for my iPod is a pain in the butt.

Here is a link to a 1 Ghz OWC Mercury Extreme processor. I'm looking not to spend that much 200 to 250. Around that range. Tell me what you think.
Also, I was reading the installation manual at it said that you had to upgrade the firmware but the ony way you could do it was to boot in OS 9. I don't have OS 9 on the computer. Do you think I should put OS 9 on or are there others ways around it?

Seeings how your mac can still boot & run OS 9 natively, that should be easy, but it would nice if you didn't have to go to that trouble....

OTOH, I bought an OWC G4/550 upgrade card for my B&W years ago, and it has & still is performing flawlessy to this day, even though I overclocked it to 650mhz within a few months of installing it.

I had to do a f/w patch too, to allow the G4 to boot, but of course that was back before OS X came out and it was not an issue then..... just plug & play 4 sure :)

Perhaps you should check with the other uprgade makers to see if they have an OS X native f/w updater (GigaDesigns, Powerlogix, Sonnet ect)

good luck!

Done three Daystar CPU upgrades for G4 powerbooks. Excellent.

I have a Sonnet G4 1GHz in my Sawtooth G4 and it runs perfect. It came with a new heatsink and a fan. I'm guessing the fan is there because its really a 933 chip thats OC'ed to 1GHz. Same as the OWC 1GHz.

Sonnet is just like Apple in the way that all of their stuff just works. It is my second Sonnet (first was a G4 500 ZIF for a B&W I gave to my Aunt) and its all I could expect and more.
