There’s lots of ‘I love/hate my iPhone 12 Pro!’ posts on these forums.

However:

Has anyone actually bought the plain iPhone 12?

Believe me, I’ve looked but there seems to be no threads on this!

C’mon, I know many of you will have bought a iPhone 12 in blue (yes just ‘blue’ - not ‘pacific blue’!).

Nothing to be embarrassed about - by all accounts it’s a great phone. And I’m interested: what do you iPhone 12 owners think of it?

(Btw: this post is written with my tongue in my cheek a little 😊).

I did and I love it. I don't really use the telephoto lens and I was looking to get away from the max model, which is heavy. The 12 is super light.

I also got the 12 (Blue) and love it. But my question is how did you determine "the calibration of the screen is terrible"?
What did you "calibrate" it with it or are you using your eyes to compare it to something else? Just curious

I bought it in blue and I'm returning it! The blue looks cheap and the calibration of the screen is terrible.

I'm guessing they are referring to the screen looking more yellow than last years, which seems to be pretty wide spread so far among early adopters (my 12's display is definitely warmer colored than my wife's X or my old XR).

I bought the 12 in Black with 256 GB and choose it without any hesitation over the 12 Pro for several reasons :
- In EU pricing at same storage (I want 256), 12 Pro is an extra €200 (vs $120 in US, big difference!)
- I really don't care about telephoto, LiDAR and night portrait
- I prefer aluminium
- I don't want to edit photo/movie in RAW
- Quite lighter with same dimension

I would have choose with no doubt the Pro if it had important improvement on notch/bezel size or ProMotion. This year - once again for MY use of the phone in real life - I don't find the few extra worth €200 at all since I'm not interested in these few extras. This was not true at all for the X - 11 Pro period just because of the OLED screen + thinner bezels vs regular iPhone.

So I'm in the same boat !
Keep in mind in MR forums there is a lot of Apple fanboys and strong tech enthusiasts in general who tend to upgrade to the lastest and greatest no matter what. ;)

Bought the 12 in black yesterday evening. Sitting here while comparing with my 11pro.
Right now i cannot decide which one to use in the future. A friend of mine is taking the other iphone no matter which I choose.
The first thing I felt yesterday that the top half is too heavy. The phone is not in balance.
The color is great, reminds of my beloved i5 in black I owned 2012/3.

Until sunday i have to choose one and I have no clue.
I really missed the days where you have not so many options. On my list I have pros and cons for all 4 models.
That sucks, Apple!

Side by side comparison with my iPhone 11, iPad Air 4 (also new and arrived the same day and I love it) and my partner's Pixel 4a - whites are very yellow/beige and blues quite off as well (and yes I did turn off true tone). It's so visually beige that even without a side by side comparison it still looks terrible.

Ok that is wrong. I don't have my iPhone 11 to directly compare, but when I go to a white settings screen (with Dark Mode turned off and True Tone also off), my 12 looks much closer to your earlier phone (which I assume is the one on the left).
Have been comparing my iPhone 12 to my 2019 iMac (which is color calibrated for photo work) and before turning off True Tone the white in photos in the Photos app (on both the iMac and iPhone) look much warmer on the iPhone than the iMac. But they look almost identical when I turn True Tone is turned off - even allowing for slight differences in brightness in the two devices.

No nobody did.
They are sitting in apples shelf’s untouched. Billions in the meantime. So apple is giving them away for free now 🤷‍♂️

The iPhone 11 is on the right, the 12 is on the left. Admittedly the photo I took with my iPad (not the world's greatest camera) shifted everything a bit blue so the 11 doesn't look great in this photo and the 12 doesn't look as bad as it actually is, but in real life my 11 looks like true white (also compared against an iPad, Pixel 4a and it checks out as the white color being very close between those devices) whereas the iPhone 12 definitely looks beige. Honestly I hope that not all 12s are like that and the one I received is simply defective, but I'll be returning it either way!

Maybe my display is off but the one on the left is very pinkish looking while the one on the right looks normal/good.

I turned off True Tone on my 12 Pro and compared it at full brightness with my iPhone 8 and they're very similar in color. I feel like a handful of people go through this every year and you always hear the same "it'll get better as the glue dries" and "it's more color accurate so you should be happy" replies and then it just fades away after a month or two.

I probably should've said for sure as the picture isn't quite true to life (but does at least capture how different the white point is on the two displays) but the one on the left is the iPhone 12. Yes, I hear those every year too and thought it was just people being overly picky as I had never received an iPhone that I wasn't happy with before, but now that I've seen the issue first hand it does make you wonder if in the rush to get the initial batch out for preorder and launch a certain percentage of iPhones with improperly calibrated or defective screens slip through.

Oh I don't doubt it one bit. That said, I think there's a lot of people that are overly sensitive and/or may not know about the settings that can be changed to get a more cool screen temp (not you; just people). In the end, it comes down to whether or not you're happy with it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking advantage of Apple's exceptional return/exchange policies.

I love my iPhone 12 in blue. I am coming from an XS Max and I really like the lighter weight. I never used the telephoto lens on my XS and I would rather have the wide and ultra wide. I chose blue which really isn't critical since I also bought a midnight blue silicone case for it. However, I did notice the blue seems quite dark at night in my living room, and lighter during the day outside.
I'm glad I got it over the pro. I don't need the third camera lens and I couldn't see $200 for the premium finish.

Thanks for sharing everyone!

Most ‘regular’ people are going to buy the 12 (and let’s face it, still probably the 11 in these ‘interesting’ times) so it’s super interesting to see how that phone is being received on the MR forums.

Yeah it’s good to accept the compromises and the only pay for the features that we really value.

For me, I’d love the telephoto lens and the regular wide angle lens - that would be my perfect combination. And one likely that Apple will never give me!

Thanks. Interesting how you say that one of the important factors for you is that the 12 is lighter than the 12 pro.

It seems with their regular mainstream phones Apple are moving back to making them lighter again.

Heavy steel seems to be ‘premium’ in Apple land. Yet ‘premium’ is often associated with being lightweight too.

So similar to the Watch, I wonder if we might see titanium move to the Pro Plus at some point as the premium top end material?

Presumably this didn’t happen this time round, as it’s also an expensive metal (and Tim Cook loves his pricing tiers: ‘and for just another $100 you could get...’).

Maybe they’re saving it for the time when the pro goes portless and becomes waterproof...

It is interesting, with the regular 12 being more expensive this year ($830 if not buying through a carrier), it seems to be a minor additional cost to step up to the pro for the extra RAM, double the storage, the extra camera lens, the future use of ProRAW imaging, and the stainless steel finish (probably the least important from that list). When it was a $300 difference it was a no brainer to stick with the "regular" model last time around, but man- this time it seems that for only $170 more....

I purchased both the 12 and the 12 Pro in black/graphite because I just could not decide. Even when I picked both of them up launch day I couldn't decide. But after a while of usage, I ultimately decided to stay with the 12 and return the 12 Pro. I noticed the 12 Pro screen was a lot warmer than the regular 12. And the biggest deciding factor for me, weight. The 12 is SO much lighter than the Pro. I know on paper the 12 Pro isn't much heavier than the Pro, but after a good while of usage, it definitely becomes noticeable. I wasn't part of the "iT's OnLy $150 eXtRa. mIgHt As WeLl gEt tHe pRo" crowd. For me, it actually would've been $131 extra for the Pro with sales tax, which is nothing. But weight matters way too much to me coming from the 11 Pro Max. Never use the telephoto lens, my iPad has LiDAR and never used it until recently to measure my partners height (which was inaccurate,) I don't game or keep tons of apps open to warrant the extra RAM, and I have my own camera and shoot RAW. So, it was a no brainer for me. Why spend extra money if I ultimately don't need the extras? As i've gotten older I've learned to not throw money away if its not really needed.

Also, idk about ya'll, but battery life has been pretty amazing for me. I was expecting it to be terrible coming from the Pro Max & due to people's bitching about the lower battery capacity. BUT yesterday I had 6 hours of on screen time and battery was at 52%. I think that's pretty solid.

PS: Got the 256GB 12 Pro with a Caudabe Veil Case (ultra thin case)

I went into an Apple Store today just to compare the iPhone 12 I received to the display models and my 12 is definitely a little yellower and a little duller (the Apple Store employee agreed with me and would've offered to do an exchange on the spot but didn't have any of the same color and storage size in stock) so I'm just going to continue with the return and maybe order in a few weeks (since that is when the complaints about yellow screens seem to fizzle out every year). I wanted to get a different color anyway as in my opinion the blue looks a lot better in their marketing material than it does in real life.

I agreed! Whatever works for you... some may need the specs in the Pro... and some folks just want a decent phone.

I ordered two black iPhone 64gb for my parents... only one is delivered... still investigating what's going on with the other order that should've arrived the same time. They don't need anything of the upgrade on the Pro... but they do need an upgrade from their iPhone 7+ 32gb... they barely can update their phone because of storage issues. Also, couldn't really say no to the trade-in value and loyalty credit from T-Mobile.

I, myself is planning to get the iPhone 12 PM 256gb, coming from the Xs Max 256gb.
