I'm doing some troubleshooting. I've always had some problems with this 7,1 Mac Pro. I've had it for almost a year. It crashes out of nowhere. Not often. Maybe once a week or two. Mostly it's overnight. Sometimes it's while I'm sitting in front of the monitor touching nothing. So ram might be an issue. I'm wondering. I have 160 GB Nemix ram mixed with apple. I think I have four 32 sticks with 4 8 GB apple ram. 2933 MHz DDRA R-DIMM. Initially one of the 32 sticks didn't work. I had to send it back for a replacement.

I'm just wondering whether anyone has reported problems.

Why don't you run memtest just to be on the safe side?

Ah. Yeah. I think I'm going to. I've never done it. Is this where I have test one stick at a time. I talked to tech support this morning. That's what he suggested as the first step - since all of the Apple Stores are closed around here, for a week or more.

For that amount of RAM, it's gonna take couple of days to test and report, the more the passes the better.

By the time you're done Apple store will certainly be open ;)

I downloaded a free memtest app. I'm assuming it won't take quite that long! Lol! Thank you. Happy holidays.

I tried 22 but then I downloaded 86. That’s the right one? I haven’t done it yet.

No problems, have been running 192GB (6 x32) for around a year now. Don't mix the Ram - I pulled the 32GB of Apple ram & boxed it (for possible Apple care return) - am using only matched sticks of Nemix ram in this machine.
In my experience, Nexmix seem to be responsive & so on the chance of a dodgy stick, a return shouldn't be problematic. Unclear who the ram was returned to, reads like Apple.

Apple recommendations for the MP 7.1 are (despite the dopey base 32GB config): 6 x matched RAM sticks (for machines above 8 cores) DDR4-2933 PC4-23400, eg: 48GB (6x8) or 96GB (6x16) or 192GB (6x32) or 384 GB (12x32) etc, etc ...

Otherwise: I never let the machine sleep or spin down drives etc (standard recommendations & config for recording studios /media production etc). The mac is always powered down when not in use, along with the rest of this studio running off UPS. Turning off the UPS after power down and this effectively powers down the whole studio & in the case of the mac, essentially performs a SMC reset every reboot. This also fits in nicely with possible power outages, brown outs and in-facility electrical protection, lightning strikes etc.

All of which has been pretty much (our) standard pro studio practice in one way or another for the past 30 years or so. Hope this helps.

I have 6x16 Nemix sticks in my MP7,1, also removed the stock apple ram. Haven’t had any issues with it yet though I have it for just about a month.

I did the same with my machine, 96GB of RAM from OWC (six sticks) and put the four original sticks in the box should they be needed for warranty and to include when I sell it at some point down the road.

I wonder what the Ramifications (har har) of doing a ram update in steps might be?

Get 2x 32GB Nemix RDimms to replace the base 7,1 then add 2 more, then 2 more down the road. How much speed is actually lost by not going full-on 6 modules from the get go.

Similar problems here.

However, I was experiencing random restarts with the stock 32-GB Ram from Day-1 in July. In fact, it was the random restarts that initially prompted me to go ahead and order the the 96-GB Ram sticks from Nemix earlier than I had planned (in hopes that might be the issue). After installing the new Ram, same issues. Apple finally decided to replace my entire Mac Pro after trying everything imaginable for weeks - they decided it must be the logic board. I received the replacement machine in September, moved the Remix Ram over (as they made me return the previous unit with the stock 32-GB from the new unit the same day). The new Mac Pro made it about 2-3 days before exhibiting the same behavior.

The random restarts are happening less often, but I still get them usually every 3-4 days apart. I have documented about 40 crashes since September in the new machine (all generating different looking crash logs). Most occur when waking from sleep overnight, but other times in Adobe AI, Photoshop or InDesign (usually right after launching) and Quicktime. I have never had a crash while working in other Apple apps like Mail/Messages (except Quicktime) or Quickbooks/Quicken which I use daily.

Based on other threads on this Forum, I think the general consensus is a problem with the w5700x GPU itself or it's driver, but all the Apple Techs I have worked with (including Apple Engineering) dismiss that as the cause. I see several people on the Forum that claim when they switched their w5700x card for the far more expensive Vega Pro card their random crashes ended.

Well I have the exact same problems, with one more on a specific audio app that may be a symptom of the same problem. I think I'll look into the Vega Pro. And maybe pull the appl ram I have mixed in with the Nemix. I'm not sure why that would present a problem but II can accept that not all ram is the same and might have some variations that can cause problems.

I'm not using an Apple Monitor but rarher a Samsung curved gaming monitor. I don't know whether this would presrnt a problem or an issue. I just decided that the GPU can't be the problem. Further investigations. Thank you.

What GPU do you have?

I just replaced the apple ram with four 16GB Nemix. So no more mixed sticks. 192GB. Let's see if this improves my performance. $2,800 is too much for me to upgrade my GPU.
