TLDR: has anyone figured out why the AirPods Max headphones keep getting the pairing disease? and why does it usually happen right after a software update?

I ordered my AirPods Max the first day they were announced. And I was lucky to get a pair delivered to my house during the pandemic lockdowns.

About a month after I first got them my AirPods Max got the "pairing disease" where I would put them on my head and they would not play sound from my phone or computer. The only way I could get them to pair with my Apple device was to delete them from my phone and from FindMy and then reset them to factory settings and then re-pair them to my phone. But then the next time I picked them up the same thing would happen. This is what I have been calling the pairing disease.

People online told me that Apple doesn't know what is causing it, and advised me to wait for the next software update. So I waited for the next firmware update, and after the next firmware update my AirPods Max did get better. They were cured from the pairing disease... at least for a while.

I have had original AirPods, three pairs of beats headphones with an Apple pairing chip in them, and my wife has a pair of AirPods Pro, and I got the AirPods Pro2 a few months ago. None of these headphones have ever gotten the pairing disease or anything like it in my experience.

Then almost a year after I got them my AirPods Max started getting the pairing disease again, and this time I didn't know how to get rid of it. I brought my AirPods Max into the local Apple Store, the genius I spoke with also observed the problem and didn't know how to fix it, and so the Apple Store Genius mailed them away to be checked out.

The genius also sold me a 2 year drop protection warranty on my AirPods Max at the same time, which I was happy to buy right before my 1 year warranty was expiring.

Apple ended up just sending me a new pair or refurb pair of AirPods Max that did not have the pairing disease. Then I was happy because I had a two year warranty and I also had a new pair of AirPods Max.

Until last week, right after the software update to I think 17.0.3 on my phone, then my AirPods Max started getting the pairing disease again. Same exact symptoms and same exact problem just over two years after I had the problem the last time.

Fortunately I was able to call Apple and ask for their help. They recorded some data from my AirPods Max and they said that the only thing they could do was to send my APM in for service. The CSR said that since I was less than a month outside of my 2 year warranty he would not charge for the service to fix the pairing disease. I was lucky about that... because otherwise it would have been expensive!

But in any case, has anyone figured out why the AirPods Max headphones keep getting the pairing disease and why it usually happens right after a software update?

I never had this problem with other Apple headphones, and I would be very upset if they told me that I was going to have to pay $330 or something to get it serviced. Thanks!

I don't have a solution for you, unfortunately.

My AirPods Max are 13 months old. I've been having the issue or at least a similar issue. It started once or twice a month approximately 6 or 7 months ago and has become daily. The AirPods say they're connected, but no sound will play. Sometimes a reboot of my device fixed it, sometimes putting them back in the case and taking them back out fixed it, but both these "fixes" have gotten less reliable. Until recently it had reached the that unpair/factory reset/repair was the only reliable fix. The past week or so, this has been less successful and has required multiple factory resets to get them to repair.

None of the accessibility "fixes" or anything else I've found online has done anything to resolve the problem. Fortunately, I bought AppleCare on them. I got on support chat last night and we went through the support rigamarole. The agent finally decided they needed to be replaced. I'm just waiting on the replacements to arrive. I'll be curious to see if the problem pops up with the replacements.

I can share though, that my AirPods Max are almost exclusively used with my iPad. They live on my nightstand and get used at night for music/movies. I have iPad OS auto updates disabled and have noticed no change in the issue when software or firmware updates occur. I'm not saying there's no connection. I've just not noticed it personally.

Anyhow, I share your frustration.
