I just tried to get an LG 34BK95U-WE (Ultrawide 5K 34") monitor to work on my 2021 14" mb pro (M1x Max) and it was a complete fail. Max resolution was 3440x1400 and you could not get higher using SwitchResX (or create a custom resolution). The HDMI port won’t drive it. I’m wondering if one of the other monitors (e.g. LG 49WL95C-WE) would work. My guess is not, but if you have either of these running at full resolution on a Macbook (not a mini—evidently the smaller monitor does work as the primary monitor on a 2020 M1 Mini), please tell me what you did to get it to work. Lacking that, do you have an ultrawide 5K or better monitor that does work? Thanks.

"Use DisplayPort 1.4 or Thunderbolt 3 USB-C for full 5120 x 2160 resolution"
I was using Thunderbolt 3. Also tried a Thunderbolt 4 cable. Have you actually tried using a Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort converter or are you just guessing?

Just guessing and by connector I meant cable - I thought you were using an HDMI cable. HDMI probably won't work - buy a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable ($50!)

Tried that. Both Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4. Neither worked. HDMI is limited to 4K on this particular machine, so that obviously won’t work.

I would call the manufacturer and see what they recommend - maybe a firmware update?

It’s very difficult to get in touch with someone at LG. Infinite robotic assistents that don’t understand the question, but no way to get a human being. My guess is that this is a MacOS problem. The operating system is simply not offering resolutions that the hardware clearly supports. Maybe there’s a workaround other than switchresx, which cannot create custom resolutions with Apple silicon.

Thanks for the heads up. I have the 49 inch version and planned to use it with a Studio. I cancelled because of the reports of whining noise. Be interested to hear if you get it working.

FWIW... I have a MacBook Pro Max 32GB 24 core, and have no problems running it on my LG 49WL95C-WE at 5120x1440 at 60 Hz. In fact, that's what I'm using as I type this. But I'm using the USB C cable that came with the monitor to connect. I remember reading somewhere that you must use THAT cable in order for power, video out, and downstream USB to work. It doesn't matter how good of a USB C cable you have... only the LG cable will work. I read that and never tried another one because this one worked.

I had SwitchResX installed to run the MacBook monitor at a higher res (more space), so I don't know if that helps or not. I didn't have to use it to change the resolution. I got 5120x1440 as soon as I plugged the cable in.

I'm also using a Logitech MX Master 3 (PC version) via bluetooth and have had none of the problems others have reported in the forum. It's fast, precise, and smooth. The external keyboard I'm using is wireless but not bluetooth. I have its dongle plugged into one of the usb port on the monitor, and it works fine as well.

Obviously YMMV, but this setup has been rock-solid for me.

HTH
Thanks!

I am running the 49" 49WL95C-W at full resolution. The setup is a 16" MBP with the usual Intel graphics card plus an AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8 GB card I had Apple install at the time of purchase. Only the Radeon card can drive this monitor, and you want to use the USB-C cable that LG provides with it. A nice side note is you can leave you MBP unplugged - the USB-C cable powers it.
