We took our Macbook in to the apple store for a repair on Tuesday and got it back on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, we got the first of five (so far) unauthorized purchases on our Itunes account. Each purchase was about $40. It seems likely that our info was somehow compromised when we took the computer in for repair.

If it is the case, that is pretty outrageous. I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

You've probably already done this, but just change your password and (if you want to) your Apple ID email.

Just because they go by the title "genius" at the store doesn't mean some of them aren't thieves and sicko's do like Kier said and change your passwords.

You know why some child porn traffickers get caught by computer techs working on their machines right? Because there is no reasonable expectation of privacy concerning ones files when a device is handed over to an expert--but no one bothers to complain about the nosy voyeuristic computer expert digging around peoples personal files when they catch the other pervert with the child porn in the process.

Better yet if you REALLY want privacy back up all your files regularly and don't leave any personal info on the hard drive for those freaks to steal if you need to bring it in for servicing.

sort of a humorous update -

Of course, I changed my password (and account ID for good measure) as soon as I noticed this. Problem stopped. Next step - contact apple support to have the charges to my itunes account reversed. D'oh! The charges haven't been reversed yet, but apple did helpfully freeze my account and permanently ban me from ever using my primary credit card on the account! :(

Considering that the unauthorized charges had completely stopped once I changed the logon info, the freeze was completely pointless and illogical. The credit card ban even more so!

I'd get with the bank to dispute those UA charges and request a new debit card as well. You seemed to have handled it fine from Apples end but if you don't get a new card with a new number and cancel the old one your personal bank data is still in the wind.

Did they guess your password or were you still signed in? This is my biggest worry when taking something like a computer in for repair.

I think we were still signed in, but the info was also in the keychain without password protection. We don't have any financial or other account info on this computer (aside from this stupid itunes account), so I never really put much thought into protecting it.

The credit card company was great - refunded the charges and overnighted us new cards.

It's still pretty annoying on Apple's end. Especially because the customer service rep initially told me that "numerous purchases" had been made over the last several months from the same IP address and computer as the fraudulent purchases. I knew that was impossible. When I pressed them on it, the rep admitted that the fraudulent purchases had been made from a different IP address from every other purchase.
