You've seen the boxes to integrate iPods with car stereos. Most car makers are trying to lure people with their better, more seamless versions.

As much as I've seen them hyped lately in local store flyers, I set out with my iPod in hand to see whether my Asian music information would show up properly on all those made-in-Asia car stereos that people sell.

I first went to Sound Advice, which is part of Tweeter, a moderate audio/video chain. Nearly every head unit had the "iPod ready" box checked. Still, there was no display of any kind and no salesperson/order taker in the area.

Circuit City had more of a display and I saw that by accident a few days earlier and didn't have my iPod.

I also tried Best Buy (don't go there, please) because they've had integration products in many of their flyers. You couldn't even tell for certain which head units were iPod ready but those with fixed alphanumeric displays certainly weren't going to handle Japanese any better than my current Alpine unit.

Of course, I live in the Orlando area and it's far from civilisation. Perhaps, if I was still in Philly, I wouldn't be having a problem. I suppose my next option is to try a store that isn't that well known. I'm feeling a little odd about the situation because someone will say "What the hell are you doing with all that furn music? Can't you just buy some nice Amurcan country music and listen to that?" ;)

My uncle has a Kenwood receiver that has iPod integration that he got from a local stereo company. It's really nice but I prefer an FM transmitter just because I can easily change it from car to car.

I've got an Alpine headunit with the iPod adaptor. It's good, but the scrolling is slow (on the unit) and it always resets the iPod to repeat all when you unplug it!

I installed it myself, it's pretty easy if your car has a standard DIN sized stereo...

Look at Pioneer's new stuff. They have an iPod adapter that connects up to any of their new head units. You can control the iPod from the head unit from what I understand.

The trouble with FM transmission is that you give up your digital audio benefits.

Anyway, I looked at Circuit City today and didn't see anything there at that store, though they were really pushing satellite radio.

LOL...and:

you ain't frum 'round here, is ye???

Well, I'm in a much smaller town than Orlando. Let's just say there is no Best Buy, Circuit City, or anything else like those to shop. Wal Mart has Pioneer units for around $119 that say iPod ready. There's a local chain that specializes in car stereo, but when I went by to ask them about iPod ready units, they were less than helpful. I mean, it's a potential sale, why the lack of interest? I was also told the Pioneer adapter wouldn't work on my older head unit.

I'm going to give in soon, though, and buy a new unit that does work with my new 5G. I don't feel like paying $50 for an iTrip.

Yup, yup! :D

Good luck to you then. I lived in a town of 7000 in Ohio for a while and that was interesting--too interesting. They even have a Wal-Mart there now. Woohoo!

I may be headed to one of the other locations for Sound Advice or I'll stop in Philly on the drive back from Christmas time to check things out. Someone also shopping in Best Buy mentioned Crutchfield after I told him that I wanted to see a demo with my iPod. I somehow think that he didn't quite get what I was saying--I probably wasn't clear.

I suppose I can e-mail Alpine about my language requirements, if their website actually works with Mac browsers long enough to let me send a message through it. :p

Harmon Kardon has a slick looking unit that just hit the market in Sept. It is called the Drive + Play. I have read a few reviews on it. It looks nice and integrates with your existing stereo system in a number of ways. It runs about $199.00
