Old style mac mini preferably.

I'm thinking of getting an optibay, removing my disc drive, and putting a 1tb hdd in there, then putting a 1tb hdd in the stock location, giving me 2tb's of internal storage with striping. Has anyone done this? Are there problems/risks to consider, other than lack of airflow from the bigger drive in stock location?

I know of all the external options, and I'm not interested.

the oem slot will not fit a 1tb drive but you can do a 750gb slim scorpio blue and on top the thicker 1tb for a total of 1.75tb.

if you really want a pair of 1tb drives you need to remove two of the plastic mounting tabs. on the oem slot. this means the 1tb drive will connect via the side holes and the sata interface.

there was a seller on ebay that built a few. I built 2 1.75 tb machine both work fine after 7 or 8 months use.

the 750 gb slim model

so did you use a caddy for the 1tb drive?

also, does any of the steps change if i have an a1176 mini instead of the a1283?

yes on top I used a caddy with most. some I purchased 2.53ghz servers. they come with a caddy/tray in place. yes the a1176 has a different interface for the dvd so you need the correct caddy .

sata to pata i am 90 percent sure this is it. they will answer your email check with them. this works with 1.83 and 2.0 pre 2009 minis. if you search on ebay sometimes it can be found for 25 bucks.
