I have a friend that's moving to Guam from Texas September 1st. She's looking for a solution to get her 24" White Intel iMac over there. She does not have the original box it came in. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how she could get it there? I looked at iLugger, but it goes over the carry on limits for American Airlines by a few inches. It looks like she's just going to have to ship it, but we'll need a box. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have shipped more that once. I use the original box. and it works just fine. If you don't have the original box, try to beg, borrow or get one some way. The only precaution I have taken beyond the original box is pitting an extra sheet of cardboard on the screen side. The reason the original box is important is that it tells the carrier that it is a computer and throwing it from high places should be discouraged.

UPS/FedEx/DHL are not going to be cheap solutions, but perhaps the most reliable for something as precious as an iMac.
If you dont have a box to ship it with, I would suggest you go to a UPS store, they will probably have some type of box, paddings, etc. It will cost more but safer.
The iMac is actually a pretty robust computer when it comes to shipping. I've had iMacs shipped from as far away as MA to HI without incident. If you don't have the original box, try to duplicate the packing method, use styrofoam sheets at the top and bottom to create cradles that put at least 2" between the device and the box walls, set it in a box and either leave it as is or fill with packing peanuts.
I have a friend who checked his as luggage in its original box, with clothes filling the gaps in the box. This was actually several flights, starting in Canada and ending in Indonesia. I'm getting ready to ship my 24" iMac, but it will be in a crate so should have plenty of protection as long as the crate isn't left out in the rain.
^^^Packing in a crate sounds ideal. You can never be too cautious when shipping overseas.
I understand throwing out the box if there's no room where you live. I always keep the boxes, even for iPods and Airport Express. Apple's packaging design is so well-thought out and integral as a part of their product that it seems almost like discarding part of the product by trashing the packaging.

You might want to call your local Apple store to see if they have an extra box. I shipped my LED display back East - although I had the original box (foam, box, etc) - I didn't have the outer brown cardboard box.
I called the store and they said I could swing by and pick it up.
