I read a number of posts where individuals were lucky enough to switch a Magic Mouse for the Magic Trackpad in the physical Apple Store. I believe in every case I read, the Apple Store simply let them keep both instead of ripping open the iMac box, removing the Magic Mouse, and throwing in a Magic Trackpad.

Can everyone who successfully managed to make the switch post the country they are from (in case Apple retail operates differently in other countries) and whether they were simply given an extra Magic Trackpad or if they took the Magic Mouse out of the box?

The reason I ask is because when I called, they told me that I had to order it online for the Magic Trackpad. But then I mentioned how I simply wanted to purchase the iMac in store without having to wait a couple of days. After speaking to their manager, they came back saying it is something they will be able to accommodate.

I'm wondering if this is a secret unspoken rule that Apple is allowing? My phone call was to the Staten Island, NY (USA) Apple Store.

I don't know if I'd go as far as saying it's a special secret trick. Apple is just accommodating, especially when they're selling you a (minimum) $1200 computer.

Interestingly enough, I asked the guy at the Apple Store Bluewater in UK about the trackpad as I thought I had a choice between them. He replied that no, they all come with the magic mouse. Maybe I should have asked if I can swap it but will give them a call tomorrow and report back. The still had the old macs on display with old pricing and they were quite surprised to find out they have the new ones in stock so maybe it was all happening too quickly for them.

As posted in another thread, I asked for this in the Apple Store in Kingston-Upon-Thames (UK). They went away and came back saying I could have it. In fact they discounted the mac by £60 and charged me for the trackpad. I also kept the magic mouse.

Worth asking I think. You could also try "Oh! Can I not have the trackpad? Oh well I guess I should buy online then" and start to leave the shop. ;)

No i wanted the mouse,

On a side note i asked if i could change the keyboard for a wired one with a num pad and they just get me one for free which was very very nice of them!
got the wireless one and the wired one with num pad as a result.

Manchester store in Trafford centre for those wondering!

Wanna send me the other keyboard?

I went to two Apple stores this week trying to get a 21" iMac. Both sales guys said they'd help me out. The one at South Hills Apple Store said he'd swap it out for me, only to find out they had no base 21" models in stock. When I went to the Ross Park store the manager said he'd give me the trackpad for $30 bucks.

I told them I already have a Apple Wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse on my MacBook so I really didnt need to have another mouse. I figured if I cant get it then I could order it online, but both places said they'd help me out.

I guess when you spend $1300 bucks w/ tax they are a little more willing to help

Yes i agree, most of the guys working in the apple stores are average joes.
so if they can help someone else out they will.

I purchased the base 27" iMac at Pentagon City, VA and had no problems getting a free trackpad.

Me: "I'm buying an iMac and want a swap for a trackpad."
Apple: "We don't do that in stores, but you can do it online."
Me: "Some of my friends had purchased here and they told me if you guys are feeling particularly generous, it can be done..."
Apple: "Which iMac are you buying?"
Me: "Base 27"
Apple: "Phil! [calling manager]. Someone will meet you over by the iMacs in a moment."

Boom. Love Apple service.

I wonder if you can do it after the fact. I got the bundled magic mouse which I haven't been able to even use. Ive been using a razor mouse, but would love a track pad.

Yeah I asked the store when I was in there buying my iMac, and they said I couldn't do the swap...but now that some people have had it done I am thinking of calling to see what they can do.

I might try this tomorrow, and mention the couple of days that I waited in line for an iPad 2 and they never had any of the models I wanted.

I was asked at the Apple Stored Trafford Centre do I want magic mouse or track pad - i chose magic mouse

I bought my 27 last wednesday. as the sales guy was checking me out I asked him for the trackpad instead of the mouse. He disapeared for about 10 mins and came back with a track pad. He subtracted the cost from the imac and added in in as a separate item. He said "gee I hope I dont forget to take the mouse out of the box". He handed me back my credit card and said enjoy your mac!
I see why the mouse has so many haters Its just bad. It feels like its gliding on dirt. I love the track pad!

Boy, there must be a lot of lawyers replying to this thread. I tried to switch the mouse for a trackpad and I was denied. Then, I tried a different angle and no dice. Maybe my salesmen was trying to get promoted? Don't know, but congrats to those who were successful. My Mom is happy nonetheless! :D

tried it as well in the store in Delware and didn't work. However, I was able to sell the magic mouse I already had from my old iMac on Ebay so it all evens out :)

I was getting excited to go in and try to get one until these past 2 posts. I'm going with the story that I ordered it online and realized that I'd prefer the trackpad afterward, then ask if I can have it switched out. I would probably even be ok if they did switch it out for me instead of tossing me the pad for free

Honestly its not going to hurt to ask. I'm sure if you got Apple Care with the iMac they would probably give the trackpad to you for free.

Worst case just order it online, shipping would be free at that point.

:apple: should include Magic TrackPad AND Magic Mouse free of charge for them who ordered BTO options such as Processor, VRAM, RAM, HDD and SSD option. Maybe minimum two options or more.

That will make people want more BTO options

I strolled into the Apple Store. Played with the high-end 27". Sales chap comes over. "I'd like to buy this, but could I have the trackpad instead of the mouse?" I ask.

"Oh we'll just throw that in for free" he says.

I must say the trackpad is excellent. Even the mouse is quite good (for once! having owned or used the last 10 years worth of Apple's mice this is a breath of fresh air. Still using my Razer for work+gaming though!).

Same thing happened to me last wednesday on my 27".
