after using the iPhone X for over 2 months, I stopped convincing myself that it is a better and convenient phone than the 8+ with the same old design.

Reasons for switching back:

1. That notch. God, it’s reeeeeeeally bothering the **** out of me. Apple needs to get rid of that.
2. The screen (though taller) is too narrow for media consumption. I’ve always found myself using the 8+ when watching YouTube videos.
3. Touch ID is better, faster and more convenient than Face ID.
4. Finally, the 8+ has longer battery life and doesn’t have the battery bug of the X (same battery usage and battery standby).

1.) The notch is a really subjective stance for many. Either you can accept it for what it is or you shun it all together. It’s just a matter of preference.

2.) for video watching, I do agree that the iPhone 8 would likely be more ideal in that situation, being that in landscape, you don’t have the notch interfering. But it’s not really an issue for me. Again, personal opinion.

3.) Touch ID versus Face ID. Touch ID is still great in biometric security, but I really do like that face ID does eliminate some of the issues that touch ID was problematic with. But the reality is, touch ID is not Apples future with security, Face ID is.

4.) Battery life has been reported stronger with the iPhone 8. But I think it’s also subjective depending on your settings and usage as well.

You will find the majority of the members here won't agree with you. But for you and the minority that agree, enjoy your legacy phone while you can. Future iPhones will be adopting iPhone X aesthetic and functionality.

I have the 8 plus now, and it works fine. I agree the X Aesthetic is here to stay for the time being. Unfortunately I do not like the look of the X. Thats why I am looking elsewhere for my next phone.

Seems I’m going against the grain here, but I sold my X on Monday after using it for 3 months. I’m back on a Plus, the 8 Plus.

I wanted to love the X because it’s the iPhone X. However, I started to realise over time that I was forcing myself to like it because I wanted myself to like it. After the novelty wore off, I found myself missing the Plus a lot. I had the 6s Plus and 7 Plus before it because I love the big and beautiful LCD. The width is what makes it, plus the fact that it’s a standard rectangle with no notch. I found it frustrating how the notch would hide so many elements of the status bar and I didn’t get along with the wide aspect ratio and rounded corners.

While I find the contrast and true blacks of the OLED display amazing, I prefer the IPS display with its standard RGB layout (it looks sharper, I’ve compared both in detail), no colour shift, and no risk of burn-in (I want to keep this phone for at least the next two years and burn-in is a matter of time, regardless of how resilient the display might be). I’ve also experienced a reduction in eye strain; the PWM flicker of the X was bearable, but a little unpleasant, especially in the dark when the flicker would be more pronounced due to lower brightness. True Tone also looks too yellow on the X, overly warm.

Finally, and this is the main reason I switched “back”, Face ID is something I didn’t get along with. The technology is amazing, don’t get me wrong, and it felt really futuristic how it would scan and recognise my face. BUT! It’s slower and less convenient than Touch ID 2. That’s undeniable. I tried every tip in the book and I got Face ID to be as quick as I could, but it can’t get close to the speed and convenience of Touch ID. I found Face ID to be inconsistent: sometimes it would be lightning fast, other times it would be very slow (e.g. outdoors). It’s also cumbersome to retry a failed attempt, even using the “tilt-back” method. With Touch ID, you just press the button again.

Face ID will get there. I won’t use the 8 Plus forever and I’m excited to upgrade to a future iteration of the Plus. I want a big and beautiful, refined version of the X. Faster Face ID with wider field of view and the ability to work in landscape! I know it is a long way off, but I’d love to hold out for microLED if it doesn’t take too long. And no notch, I hope!

iPhone X is a stunning piece of kit and I’m really glad so many people love it. For me, however, it’s not there yet. It’s an exciting look to the future, but it’s a first try in many areas. I’m no longer interested in being an early adopter and so I’m much more comfortable with the 8 Plus at the moment.

The 8 Plus feels like the Mid 2015 MacBook Pro does to me. The last and best of its kind. It’s not exciting and futuristic, but it’s a dependable and comfortable phone for me. I’m glad I tried the X for three months, but it isn’t the phone I want in my daily life for the next few years. Sorry.

I did but went back to the X. The notch is a non issue for me and do not even see it. My Touch ID was not working at all with the low humidity and dry fingers. Having to wet my thumb to have it work. Glad I am back to the X, Face ID works like 99.9% of the time for me.

If the notch bothers you that much, you have little choice but to go back to the 8 or 8+. Come next year it looks like it will be all FaceID with a notch on EVERY screen.

Finally someone on the same boat. You really echoed my sentiment. Exactly as you said it, I literally FORCED myself to like the X for nearly 3 months. Now it’s just my back up phone. It was a nice experience having to use an iPhone with OLED display and the new tech Face ID. But at the end of the day, CONVENIENCE is what I’m after.

My dilemma as well (looking for the next phone) since I cannot stand that notch. I’m considering the Pixel 3, but iPhone has been my daily driver since 2008.

I don't think I have to "convince myself" to love the X. Its a great phone and a nice addition to the lineup. To each his own but on your points...
  1. There's a notch? Honestly, I totally forget about it.
  2. I had a bit of hesitation with the screen size...given the reserved area at the top, its essentially the size of the non-plus phones. I am a little disappointed with the lack of size, but it's not really affected any youtube viewing to me. If the rumors are true and there's a Plus size version of X coming in 2018, I'm definitely in.
  3. For me, Touch ID and Face ID have almost exactly the same frustration/failure rate. Touch has the advantage of being able to unlock without looking at it, but then I can't unlock if my fingers are even slightly wet. Face ID's advantage is the future use of the face mapping in other non-Animoji applications.
  4. I've not seen one difference in battery life more or less from the Plus' I've owned in the past.
Where the X hands down beats the older models is the screen, and the no-home button. The screen, to me is amazing. I was extremely nervous about losing the home button, but I was totally hooked within 2 days. When it came time to prep my old phone to send in, using the home button was awkward, and seemed a step back. It still does when using the Ipad.

There are many people (like the OP) on here, who are in dire need of Apple re-education therapy. The mods have been informed of the OP's post. Corrective action is forthcoming.

Those like the OP disappear from their home in the dark of night, only to awaken and find themselves in a bed shaped like the notch in some undisclosed underground Apple bunker, where they are forced to watch iPhone X commercials over and over, have high tea with Tim, as well as watch home movies that Apple has edited showing family members singing the praises of the iPhone X. On day 90, all they know is iPhone X.

Legacy as in the next two years before the X fully matures. Yes the X is the future but that also means it technically isn’t ready for prime time, not at the mass scale as the other current iPhones.

Maybe this Fall it will change but I doubt it. It doesn’t mean I won’t dip my feet in that water but I also know i will be an early adopter of something that isn’t as bulllet proof as the say the 8+. Nice to see choices for a change though.

Same here. I’ve had the X for less than a week and I love it. The only issue I have coming from a 6+ is the overall size of the phone...I’m used to the size of the 6+ after 3.5 years. I‘d definitely get the “X+” when it comes out. The notch is a complete non issue for me now that I’ve actually used the phone for a while. I thought it kind of ruined the X’s aesthetic a bit when I first saw it, but I don’t really ever notice it anymore. I also have no problems with Face ID and don’t miss the home button at all...another thing I thought I’d have a problem with.

My thoughts are What Amazes me the most, is you have so many complaints about the notch on the iPhone X, almost as if the complainer legitimately thinks Apple reads these tech posts and that they’re going to change their design for next year just because there are general complaints about the notch design. I think there are many that don’t understand design and implementation years ahead of what it takes to even manufacture an iPhone to be ready for mass production. Obviously the notch is going to be expanded for the 2018 iPhone (Perhaps iPad as well) but will it change eventually for the future? Likely not anytime soon.

You seem to be caught up in some logical fallacy. The idea that the iPhone X is "not ready for prime time" simply because it is a first generation product is an Inductive fallacy. Or perhaps my use of 'future' has distracted you from the fact the iPhone X is here now. When I say 'future' I mean the iPhone X has set the standard for Apple and likely the rest of the industry.

That’s placebo of new shiny thing. 8 plus has exactly the same internals CPU and memory wise.

Except touch input on the iPhone X is captured at 120 Hz unlike the 60 Hz of other iPhone models (not including iPad Pro) so touch input literally IS smoother than other iPhones. it's not placebo.

I absolutely had to switch to an 8 Plus after putting up with eye pain and headaches, occasionally quite painful, from my iPhone X. The more I use the 8 Plus, the more I do like it:

- TouchID unlocks in ~ 1 second, FaceID usually takes what I’d say is an average of 3.

- The display is larger for some content/apps, especially 16:9 video and looks brighter at the same brightness level. Once I setup Night Shift to be always on, I grew to enjoy the display as the stock setting was too cool toned even with TruTone especially compared to iPhone X. iPhone X overall is better for video due to the contrast level and ultra-wide display which works well for movies but through some deliberation it’s a draw in iOS otherwise as to which has the superior display, especially for reading content.

- iPhone X is zippy and smooth, but iPhone 8 Plus benefits even more from the A11 Bionic since it’s just that much more smooth since it lacks intensive system resources like FaceID and renders less pixels. iPhone X is smooth while 8/Plus is consistently sliky smooth.

iPhone X’s size and gestures are better (swiping home is slightly more instaneous than using the home button), plus it feels more futuristic and premium though 8 Plus is the most polished version of the “original” iPhone design and works well. I’d be 100% satisfied if they increased the PPI and contrast while reducing the bezels, which I think they didn’t do so that they could make the X more desirable.

Glad I stumbled on this thread, I have the 8 Plus and have been contemplating going to the X but I think I’ll wait till the end of the year to see what Apple has in store.

I am considering this move too.

The notch does not bother me and I find face id quite good but the new gestures are driving me crazy tbh, they just feel like afterthoughts. It is the screen though in real world use it is nowhere near 5.8" and it is the dead zone at the bottom rather than the notch that bothers me more as it is a soft-bezel in all but name. The 8+ is a bit of a 'unit' size wise but if you really want a large screened iPhone then imo the 8+ is the only option.

Also as someone who switches back and forth with an android device I find the lack of any always on display quite annoying too, that is another story though and I guess we have to wait for apple to invent that.

Back on the 8+ myself after extensively trying to like the X. Same reasons as the OP, and it’s (to me) an upgrade !

Just recently switched over from the X to the PLUS myself. I started out like most with the 6 PLUS when it was the biggest and baddest. Then went to the 7 PLUS and after a bit dropped down to the 7 to get a feel for the smaller version of the phone.

Upgraded to the X because it was the next biggest and baddest thing.

Tried the X out liked it for the most part. Only dislike was probably the FACE ID and the battery. Got the 8 PLUS all white, glad to have Touch ID back in action and the battery. Both phones are almost identical at least for my uses. Only change is form factor. Sometimes I miss the more agile feel of the X but I’ve been a PLUS user since day 1. I suppose you eventually go back to what you’ve had originally. Almost like you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. I’ll still keep the X just in case I feel like swapping back to that for a bit. I don’t know maybe I just like always changing it up. Can’t keep one device for too long or else I’ll get bored of it —like anything else..

Can’t imagine switching platforms either. I tried the S8 and that only lasted for a month. El oh el, great post by the way OP.
