Has anyone ever tried using the photos app to print a photo book? I have been wanting to try for a while now, but have never tried. Does anyone have one?

I have a few made up of pictures of my daughters that I made in iPhoto so not Photos but I assume the backend is the same manufacturing process.
They are very good.
I had several made in iPhoto of trips to give to travel mates. They turned outs beautifully and were appreciated by my friends. Also did several of family--I too, assume that the same standards apply with the new Photos app.
I had a hardcover one made a couple years ago as a gift. I was very impressed. It turned out great.
Edit: my book was made with iPhoto. But if that's any indication I would assume the new ones would be as good or better with the photos app

Yes,I do, I did a photo tribute to my beloved red haired Golden Retriever, Piper, named after the red haired actress of the 50's, Piper Laurie. Came out beautiful.
I had an hard copy printed years ago that looked nice. Years later it started to bend on it's own. Not a huge problem, just next time store it somewhere where it won't warp. The softcover is nice. I like how they ship it too. #nicetouch

Like a few others, I had a hardcover book done from iPhoto a year or so back. Couldn't fault the quality of production or the service provided and would assume the back-end for Photos would be the same.
I have made several hardcover Apple photo books through iPhoto, which all turned out amazing. I have also made one so far through the Photos app on my iMac, and there were no differences that I could see. It was also amazing. Any prints I have had done through Apple (both iPhoto and Photos) have turned out awesome, especially 8x10s.
The photo books are pricey when you start adding extra pages, but worth it. Highly recommended.

I have about a dozen made using Aperture or iPhoto. Some years back I had problems with one or two but Apple did reprints free of charge with no hassle. Then when that English guy was in charge of the stores I had one that was very poor and had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it reprinted. As a Brit myself I know that customer service in the UK can be awful and this put me off getting more but a few months ago I tried again and was very pleased with the result. I used Capture one to edit my images, saved them as tiffs, imported them into Photos and made the book.

I'll probably make a few more in iPhoto before Apple completely EOL's it, at which point I'll move on to another print service company ... Apple's fault for screwing up their ecosystem.
I did convert my first book into a PDF, which I did some post-processing tricks on to get the file size way down (3.2MB!); you an download a copy by (right) clicking here. Only problem I had with my PDF conversion is that Adobe Acrobat insisted on using a 'portrait' page layout even though the book's pages were landscape (but you can zoom in to fill the screen to overlook this). FYI, the "not particularly saturated" appearance of the images was my choice, and not a printing/output attribute.
