I want to install it alongside my OSX install(specifically Mandriva) but I am not sure if it will work in Boot Camp or what not. Anyone try it and has it worked?
I tried Ubuntu 8.04 Beta yesterday. Easy to install, but you have to do few tricks to get wireless working. Touchpad didn't feel too good under Linux, but you can probably adjust it later.
Just use Bootcamp, but instead of putting in a Windows cd use Ubuntu.
Google for instructions. "installing" "Ubuntu" and "MacBook Air" should be good keywords.

make a bootcamp partition with the bootcamp assistant
after that bootcamp partition is finished, quit the assistant.
(this is where I hope you have the external drive)
burn a linux live cd and leave it in the drive.
shut down the machine and boot it back up using the option key.
you now should see 3 different disks to boot from, including your Macintosh HD, your newly created parition and the linux disk.
yeah, see, that's why I was asking why you need it, from the time I used it, it seemed like just one more factor to induce unnecessary headaches, in both usability and technical difficulty factor.
