Is the screen still yellow in this mode?

That would eliminate all the Imac hardware except the panel+backlight.
 
Good thinking, I'll give this a try with my MBP and report back within a few days.
 
I cannot get it to work with my Monoprice.com $6 MiniDP to MiniDP cable....Mac Mini to iMac.

I bought the $30 Belkin from the Apple Store today and I will try it again. Hopefully the Belkin solves my issue.
 
A better way to tell would be to clone your OS to an external hard drive and boot from that. Or install OS X on a usb flash drive and boot from it. Or from your OS DVD that came with your Mac.

How in the world would that make any difference? You would still be running the same gpu and logic board. Booting from an external would only make the system a little slower, especially if you booted from usb.
