A better way to tell would be to clone your OS to an external hard drive and boot from that. Or install OS X on a usb flash drive and boot from it. Or from your OS DVD that came with your Mac.

How in the world would that make any difference? You would still be running the same gpu and logic board. Booting from an external would only make the system a little slower, especially if you booted from usb.
