just found this comment in the Home Theatre forum

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/799536/

I apologize for the caps, but I feel it is required...

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THAT COMPANY!!!

I bought this adapter because at the time their product page said it supported uncompressed audio formats. After purchasing the cable, they snuck a little blog post on a subsection of the site stating that it did not. Over the weekend, they quietly changed the page to no longer reflect the uncompressed audio comments. I submitted a complaint to their site that was admittedly not worded very politely (no cursing, just complaining about being "duped" by their poor wording) and requested a swap for the USB+HDMI only model or a refund. They have refused, so I am now going through the process of filing a Better Business Bureau complaint to see if I can recoup my $78 after shipping. I'll be lucky if I see a single penny back and now I have to pay $40 to get a functional product from a reputable business (Monoprice.com is awesome and I should have known better!). Needless to say, avoid at all costs!

("THAT COMPANY" being Kanex - I didn't realize that both quotes didn't copy.)

the other option...

can anyone speak to the audio quality difference between this monprice option and the kanex version? i certainly appreciate the cost savings but both of these are too expensive IMO.

btw, i have pretty high quality KEF 5.1 surround sound setup. I'm not an extreme audiophile but I definitely notice and appreciate higher quality sound

for my macbook air, is there a reason to go with this new one, which incorporates Toslink vs. monoprice USB only one?

I think i just answered my own question. I don't see anything about toslink being available for the MacBook Air, so there is no point to this adapter, right?

I have one of Monoprice's Mini-Displayport USB adapters and it works fine. I'm taking it that you have a Late 2008 model which uses the Mini-Display instead of the Micro-DVI ports.

Yes. How is the sound and picture quality? I'd be playing it on a 50" HD plasma TV.

If I was only worried about 2.1 audio would this be a good purchase? Or is just buying a mini display-hdmi cable the best bet?

Does anyone have recommendations for the cables?
