It is for converting a USB C port to thunderbolt 2. You need to have a USB C port which supports thunderbolt 3 for it to be able to work though, unfortunately the current MacBook does not have thunderbolt 3.

To connect to the Thunderbolt Display you would need:

USB C digital AV adaptor
Active HDMI to display port
DisplayPort cable

This should give you video. Probably far cheaper to just buy a 27" HDMI monitor though.

- It is for connecting a computer to, for instance, the Apple Thunderbolt Display. But the computer must have Thunderbolt 3 for it to be of use - which the 12" Retina MacBook does dot.

- Incorrect. The Apple Thunderbolt Display will only accept a Thunderbolt connection. No matter how you slice it, you cannot convert an HDMI or DisplayPort signal to a Thunderbolt signal.

Yup. I stand corrected. It only accepts a thunderbolt input.
