I just have been noticing that new things happen with the classic like a new firmware and I was hoping that updates would happen to the 5.5 Gen but no updates have ever happened to the Video Ipod, has Apple forgotten about them?

Why would they update the software on the last gen iPods? They new classic is still the same 6th gen iPod classic.

what fixes are needed for the 5th and 5.5 gen ipods?

if none, why would apple add new functionalities to discontinued models?

Don't expect it at all. Apple doesn't update the software for now-obsolete iPods (ie: ones that now have a 'newer' model). Even for things like Genius that are being added to last year's classics won't come to older iPods.
