Has iPad changed your setup/future purchases?

I had my heart set on getting a new MacBook pro, but since I got an iPad I'm starting think about getting an iMac.

I'll be going to college next year but living at home so I think it will be a good combo for me.

I'm curious to know what your guys situations are and what will be in your Mac rotation in the future because of the iPad.
 
Not a bad plan, I have used my MBP at college the last 3 years much more as a desktop than a laptop anyway.

I planned to get an iMac in the near future. I will probably get one eventually but now I am in no hurry.
 
I'm in the exact same boat. Was planning on getting the new MBPro, got an iPad and have no desire for the MBPro. Planning on getting an iMac here verrrry shortly.
 
I decided that an iPad and a 17" MacBook Pro would be a better solution than just the 15" MacBook Pro I would have otherwise bought. I think the 17" is awkwardly too large sometimes but with the iPad to supplement it I can cope with the extra size. It's a great solution.
 
I'd go for the MBP tbh. For college you might want to bring a computer to school for a group assignment, write a report in bed or stuff like that. Things that would be harder to do on an iPad. And depending on what you will study you might to use some specific software in your education, and it might be good to be able to use it on your own computer while at school and whatnot.


EDIT: I'd get a cheaper (maybe the cheaper 15") MBP and maybe an iPad too. Should work out to be cheaper then iMac + iPad.
 
That's what I was thinking that'd I'd barely take it to school anyway and if I'm living at home why not get a 27 iMac. This stupid iPad is causing so many different dilemmas lol
 
You can see in my signature what I have. I am leaning toward selling:

MacBook
Kindle
Apple TV

The Kindle would be a direct victim of the iPad. The Apple TV a direct victim of the desktop and Boxee. The MacBook has lost half its utility to the desktop and half to the iPad.
 
That's my dilemma I think a 15 MBP that I could leave at home and not have to lug around but if I absolutely needed it and my iPad can't take cAre of the job I have a nice MBP
 
Totally changed the landscape for me. I have a MBP for work. At home all I really use my (old) personal MBP for is web browsing. So I plan to get an ipad, then some moderately beefy windows/linux PC for media and games. I think that the ipad will become my main web-faff device.
 
To be honest, I don't think that an iPad could replace my MBP for college. I understand you would be at home, but there could be times you need a MBP and the iPad won't cut it... as in excess amount of typing for school, grabbing files from friends via USB, anything.

I would go with a MBP and an external monitor (could be had for the same price as a 27" iMac) and use it in desktop mode and then if need be you can just unplug and go.

But the iPad could be used a lot too, but not a replacement if you don't have a notebook. IMHO.
 
I currently have a Mac Mini and an iPhone. I've pre-ordered an iPad this morning.

Originally I did have plans on buying an iMac aswell, but while I've got my Mini I'm going to monitor just how much the iPad actually effects my "regular" computing trends. Depending on how much usage I continue to get out of my Mini + iPad combo, I might just stick with what I have.

I might give the Mini a RAM boost, though.
 
I've a mbp & Apple LED setup, works well, but any kind of mobile browsing and podcast listening around the house means I have to unhook it. The arrival of the iPad (UK) will probably mean I leave the MBP on the desk. Plus, I'll probably use Boot Camp for games more frequently when I've got my iPad to play with separately.
 
I've got a nice MBP that I use almost like a desktop computer. It's quite big, so not the best thing to take when traveling. I intend to use the iPad for portable use and keep the MBP at home... but because it's a MBP and not an iMac, I can always take it somewhere if I absolutely have to. I do think the iMacs are sweet, and have gorgeous screens, but I'm hoping the iPad and MBP will work best for me.
 
Yeah. Getting my iPad made me want to fill the Mac-less void in the house even faster. Just bought a Macbook with 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 gig drive. Sooner than I expected. :)
 
I was going to sell my Macbook (signature) and go for an iMac. But meh! My Macbook works perfect! Perhaps much better than it did when I bought it! After reading some threads about how peoples old powerbook g4 and such are still going strong today I decided to just keep my Macbook for aslong as possible! Had it almost 2 years and I'm sure it'll last another 2 years! :D

I have an iPhone (signature) Which I usually sell on and use the money against the new iPhone update. I don't know if i'll do it this year or not yet, I'll wait and see what the new iPhone brings.

I got an iPad to use mostly at home and keep my iphone for calls/txts at home, and internet usage outside home.

iPhone (mobile phone for mobile usage :D)
iPad (for using at my "Pad" ;))
Macbook (for syncing iPhone/iPad, using photoshop, garageband, imovie)
 
I was planning on getting a mbp to compliment my iMac and iPhone. Now that i have iPad i have no desire to get the laptop. All my computing bases are covered. And i spent about $1,000 less to do it - thanks Steve!
 
I got a white Macbook last December but I will keep it alongside the iPad as the latter can't cover my work needs. I use Windows pretty often, and even if Pages on the iPad would be enough for some tasks, I type a lot and use accented letters, so I guess this would slow things down too much on the touchscreen keyboard. iPad and Macbook (and of course the iPhone) certainly overlap to a certain extent, but they are both reasonably affordable so it's good to have different products that match different needs. One more reason to break away from the iMac and get out of the house!
 
I've been debating replacing my alum MacBook and HDTV mini with an iMac lately. Need a little more time with the iPad to make sure I'm comfy with it vs my MacBook, but I'm still leaning in that direction.
 
I am having a similar dilemma. I am graduating in a week and want to use my student discount on a new computer. I currently have a 1st Gen Macbook, 2.26 C2D Mac Mini and an iPad. I find I prefer coding on my Mac Mini, but I think that may be because of its increased speed and the higher resolution monitor I have it hooked up to.

If I get a 15" MBP I would replace my Macbook, but if I bought a 27" iMac I don't think I would sell my Macbook, I think I still need the portability. I want to keep my Mini for media center purposes.

Personally i'm leaning towards the 15" MBP since I need the portability. You can get much beefier hardware with the iMac at a similar price though (Quad vs dual and better graphics cards.)

I would go for the 15" MBP and then save up for an external monitor/keyboard+mouse. I don't think the iPad can replace the protability needs of a laptop and it's not meant to. If you need a big screen you have your mini and an HDTV right?
 
It really just depends on your individual needs. Between desktop, laptop and iPad - all else being equal -

Desktop will always win in power; laptop will always be second
iPad will always win in mobility; laptop will always be second

If you have thought through your needs, you will know which devices make sense for you.
 
I decided to go with the iMac and iPad over the MBP and have not regretted it for a moment, even though it's the first desktop that I've purchased in 15 years! If you needed to type a bunch on the iPad at a group meeting, you could always use the iMac's tiny bluetooth keyboard.

It really depends on your major and type of work that you would be doing at school. For example, if you are going into programming, of course, you'd want a laptop.

Good luck...it is a tough decision!
 
I travel all the time and have been a great Macbook Air fan. It's a great combination of mobility and all day use comfort. While it's been my primary computer for several years, it's capacity limits prevent it from being my only commuter.

Since I got the iPad I've started traveling with my more powerful Macbook (that can be my only computer). It stays in my carryon or at my desk so I really don't notice the extra bulk and weight much, and I use the iPad whenever I'm not at my desk.

As a result of the ultra mobility and super bettery life of the iPad I use it for all things portable, and use a more powerful notebook as a desktop.

So I expect a desktop (or less portable laptop) combined with an iPad will prove to be a very good combination.

When the time comes to update my laptop I expect I'll be going with a MBP rather than a MBA, but I'll still be traveling with a laptop so well see how the iPad does over the rest of this year.
 
Pre-ordering an iPad made me far less bothered about updating my second gen iPod touch. Now my iPod touch is just going to be used for the iPod part.
