Has Jony taken the fun out of OS X?

Jony mustn't own a Mac, lol...

The whole computer and space theme just fits, and with Yosemite it's been stripped completely. Look at the new Time Machine, no more galaxy, perspective has been taken out of the buttons and etc.

Things that made the Mac quirky are just kinda fading away. Don't get me wrong, Yosemite is beautiful and the new design is pretty slick, but I've been a Mac user since Tiger and its brushed aluminum Finder. Most of the new icons are nice as well, but safari's is just toy-like, and I don't care for Launchpad's new icon either. One thing I've always liked was how clean and life-like Apple's icons were as opposed to those of XP (remember the light switch icon for preferences?)

To end my rant, I still like the 3d dock. They could've "flattened" and tweaked it to bring it up with the times, but instead they decided to update the Tiger dock. No doubt I will get over these little things, since I started running Yosemite on my machine I've completely neglected my Mavericks partition, feels dated now haha.

Jony has went through great lengths with this redesign, I wonder how long he's been bothered by the elements of the old UI..

I feel the opposite. Yosemite looks fresh. I like it as long as it is bug free and does not purposely lower the performance of older iMac hardware.

Yosemite has grown on me, as I said I haven't booted my Mavericks partition as it does feel dated. But I want my 3d dock! lol. How can I put this, not too long ago developers wrote their GUI to take advantage of hardware advancement... It seems the latest trend is to scale all that back. Which I guess isn't a bad thing for performance/battery life and etc. Just too bad Apple won't let us choose, but then I suppose software bloat would result.

Nevetheless, I also think ... gulp ... Windows 10 looks quite nice. Yosemite is nice. Windows 10 is quite nice.

I think Microsoft learned its game. With Yosemite and Windows 10 taking a modern 2D approach, they're approaching a convergence.

I define that convergence point as follows:

-- OSX is better but no longer leap years ahead of Windows. OSX looks nicer, but only in terms of fine differences of usabilty.

-- Windows is not as good, but quite good enough. Windows 10 isn't quite as refined as OSX, but now it's more a matter of opinion, rather than OSX being the standout winner.

In the days of Windows XP vs Leopard, back then OSX was the undisputed champ. This never was in dispute even through the Windows 8 era.

But I think Windows 10 is a game-changer.

Not saying Win 10 is better. I'm saying the two have converged to such a degree that we can't say Apple will hold the edge in the future.

OS X no longer years ahead of Windows? From what I seen yesterday, Windows 10 brings features that Mac OS has had for years (desktop spaces since 2005, Spotlight search, Notifcation centre...). I could never trust a company that thought that one OS suites all platforms (touch, mouse...). And the naming...

Please get the point I'm making, because you're actually kinda saying the same thing as me.

My point is, by Microsoft copying lots of OSX features, it's getting to the point where Windows is roughly good enough for most uses, relative to OSX.

I don't care how many years ago OSX had those features. What I'm saying is that, as of now, given the years of copying, we're close to reaching a parity point where most of what we need daily is in Windows.

In particularly refer to the appearance of Windows. In my view, as an admirer and user of Macintosh and OSX, this is the first time I'm thinking that Windows looks ok. The first time. I didn't even feel that when I saw Windows 8.

Well I saw the features in action and they really are not polished out and not to the standard of which they are in OS X. You are also forgetting the Windows 10 will be released in Q4 2015 meaning we will be on OS X 10.11 by that time. We have Continuity, Hand-Off, Spotlight search, Airdrop, phone call on Mac... and that is just with the release of Yosemite. Apple have another year to then work on features. That really plants Apple at least 2-3 years ahead.

It's interesting that you should walk away with that opinion, because I came away with largely the opposite impression: Windows 10 looks to me like a reactionary effort to try and curb some of the criticisms of Windows 8 and the Metro scheme by cramming a lot of the functionality back into the old school Start menu. Microsoft is simply abandoning its roadmap for Windows (hence, I imagine, why Windows 9 is not being revealed today) and is grasping at straws to make the OS relevant and palatable again, and is just tossing in features like Workspaces to make it more enterprise-friendly since that's the customer base they alienated the most.

It all stinks of flailing in the dark, in my opinion, and while I have faith that Microsoft will get things back on track, I didn't see anything yesterday that made me believe that they are there yet. Not that it matters all that much to me personally; the only Windows computer I use is my work machine and it's running Windows 7. The only thing I personally want Microsoft to get cracking on is the update to Office for Mac.

Leopard truly was revolutionary compared to XP or even Tiger. The UI was certainly more polished than the competition's. That said, I was stuck on Windows 7 for a while and it wasn't all that bad. But windows 8 really derailed Microsoft, and 10 is starting to look promising again. However, I'm happily running Yosemite on most my machines and won't be looking back lol. That is unless I need to use my iBook running Leopard.

Windows has had a universal search feature since Vista, granted it doesn't work nearly as well though and they improve it with each iteration. Lets not even talk about multi-monitor support where it absolutely blows away OS X
