Somewhere in Time
Hello,

It's been a week or so since apple released their latest update that was supposed to cure the dreaded freezing issue. So my question is, has the update worked? Do those of you who have "freezers" and have downloaded the update have fully functional freezer-less macs yet?

cheers,

mp :apple:

Worked for me.

I spent a few hours running around in Gruul's last night - no problems at all.

Freezer Burn

Hello,

It's been a week or so since apple released their latest update that was supposed to cure the dreaded freezing issue. So my question is, has the update worked? Do those of you who have "freezers" and have downloaded the update have fully functional freezer-less macs yet?

cheers,

Mine was a bad freezer. The update fixed it. Leopard still has a few quirks, though.

Mine freezes more often now (running Tiger)

Not only did it not work, I think mine freezes consistently now almost every time it goes to sleep. I don't consider telling it never to sleep a solution. I'm pretty unhappy with my $1300 silver paperweight. Sort of a money pit so far. It's better w/3 GB of RAM then it was w/1GB, but turning off with apps open isn't really acceptable.

I was convinced to switch to mac because it's bulletproof and so far, my silver 20" imac is the worst computer I've ever owned. Cutest, shiniest, fun when it works, but buggiest machine that I've owned that's been new. It usually takes a window's system a year and several programs to behave half as bad as this one did out of the box. I've wasted so much time with reinstalls and applecare (is Logic a third party software? Good question from someone who works for apple) that I'm pretty disgusted with the whole scene. And I'm getting sick of people in forums who say stuff like, funny, I didn't have that problem as some type of antithesis to the reality that a bunch of people who paid the same money as you are INDEED feeling pain.

Am I being sensitive here, or is there a contingent of apple users who only like you when you're praising apple? RIght now, I LOVE logic and garageband, but I"m feeling a little like a visitor to the Scientology celebrity center who dares ask a question or be independent minded at all. Sound off on this please - not trying to start a flame, just wondering if anybody understands the mentality of some of the "happy mac'ers" who seem to want to brush things under the rug rather than complain and make apple the best platform it can be (potentially the best platform around.)

Thanks for reading and responding.

I for one was very surprised at Apple's handling of this situation. Denial and then silence. Talking through the media rather than official channels. It was all a little too surreal for me. The fact that I had to put the amount of time and effort that I did to solve this problem and the amount of headwind that Apple gave me leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth.

My iMac haven't freeze since :

1. Clean install of Leopard

2. Install the patch.

Been on for 7 x 24 for over 1 week now.

.

Mine only froze two times right after upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. Never since! 10.5.1 updated OK. No problems (knock on wood)

I had a 1.1 freezer. I downgraded successfully to 1.0 and it worked beautifully. After upgrading to 1.2.1 it froze again. But then since applying the firmware patch it runs like a charm. I installed Leopard and are very happy since then. No freeze!

The update worked perfectly!

sorry to hear..

I don't own one yet but plan on getting one in January. I'm very sorry to hear of those having problems with their machines. I know that if I were spending that much money I'd be very pissed as well. I wouldnt play fanboy for any company if it cost me money.

I'm hoping by the time mine comes this will be a happy memory for everyone.

Mine froze after the update but it was a bug in time machine. I just moved my time machine icon in the privacy menu of spotlight preferences and no more freezes!

Ok, so what are you going to do about it? If I was you I would take it back and complain, you paid a lot of money for your computer and Apple should give you a machine that is up to YOUR standards.....just my 2 pence

It's good to see that Apple are working on solutions to fix the freezing problem, hopefully by the next update this can all be resolved completely :)

Send it back

Is it possible for you to send it back for repair or an exchange. If you have purchased it recently, I can give you a number for Linda at Apple Executive Customer Care and she will make sure your issue is resolved. My Imac was freezing all the time and now it is fixed and I believe it is a great and stable machine. Once you do get a stable machine you will love it.

Your experience is not typical with apple products. My advise is to try and be patient a little longer.

I would suggest your machine needs repairing. I get the impression that your experience isn't common.

Forget the forums, you should be putting all your effort to getting this particular machine repaired or replaced.

It's too early to write off a platform or a 'scene' with your experience so far.

In terms of your reaction to the other happy owners, it could be interpreted as owners reassuring you in a roundabout way that your experience is uncommon, rather than anything else. :)

I never had any problems with freezing in OS X. Only on windows did it use to freeze.

I don't think an update will do it. Apple has pretty much solved the software end of things and if your machine freezes now its a hardware issue and should be addressed as such, i.e. replace the video card. There is a reason why the card is backlogged in so many places. ;)

You are correct in observing the unsettling tendency of Apple fans to smugly deny the few problems that do mess up the lives of Mac users from time to time...but all you have to do is ignore them! If you want to get the best out of forums like this, just focus on the helpful posts and ignore the rest. I've found answers to countless questions here, and it only takes one really useful post to make up for the, um, less helpful ones.

I don't know what makes a person take the time to post "my XYZ works just fine, don't know what your problem is, you must've screwed something up," but it must be fulfilling because it happens every day here. However, don't let this distract you from the fact that, in the big picture, OSX is magnificent, your terrible experience is not too common, and if you continue to bother the people from which you bought your defective machine you will eventually have a really nice computer that will make you forget your Windows past.
