During the notebook event, Mr. Jobs said that Apple would be putting Mini DisplayPorts in all Macs, replacing the DVI. They have to now put it in a Mini.

I could be a switch to Nvidia and faster speeds. A new Aluminum and Glass design that also shared the MBA design somehow.

While I kind of hope you're right, they don't have to do anything... Historically, the Mini has been a repackaged iBook/MacBook. While there good things about that, one seriously bad thing is a lack of FW400, if Apple does a revision based upon the MacBook. I know my Eye TV Hybrid has real trouble recording to a USB2 drive (i.e., dropped frames), but FW works perfectly well.

I agree, and I think they are going to completely revamp the Mini, new design, new name, new marketing. Apple hopefully will not keep it crippled either. I really think we're getting the Mac Air. And this time it will come with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Superdrive will be optional, which will reduce the cost of the unit.

There is always the chance that they will merge the Apple TV and Mini Lines, but I don't see that happening because they are trying to make the Apple TV sell as much as they can by keeping the price near the cost of production. A merger would mean the unit would cost more.

Good point, for as events this week have demonstrated, we shouldn't take anything for granted, no matter how logical (or, on the other hand, unthinkable) it may seem.

Damn straight. I'm getting myself a mini now, this minute! I expect that should they ever get around to tinkering with it there'll be a minor speed bump for the Mini and possibly NVidia, but these advantages would be more than wiped out by the loss of FW, to my mind.

Andrew.

I never understood why a supedrive costs so much in macs. I mean seiously, you can buy a DVD writer off of newegg for 30 bucks...

just wanted to say that, and I too hope the mini is updated soon :)

Or there s the option that they will just quietly drop the mini replacing it with nothing.

Website screw-up?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I was just on the apple site messing around with configurations and noticed that the hard drive icon for the mac mini was changed to the SSD icon (like it is for the MacBooks and whatnot). It is still a regular HD icon for the towers however.

It could be an indicator of a new option :)

Or of course it could just be fitting in with the rest of the site.

New Egg has the DVR-K06 for $70 (+ shipping). This is the drive that ships in a lot of minis.

So, when do you think this update will happen? Before 09? MacWorld 09? WWDC 09? I would love to see an update before Christmas because I would really like to buy a Mac Mini for Christmas. Which would be my very first Mac...

So when do you think?

If they are redesigning the Mini, which is becoming increasingly for likely, then it won't be until an Apple media event, and the next one is Macworld in Jan.

If not, then it could be updated through the website with the iMac in Nov as some rumors are suggesting (about the iMac, not the Mini).

Would be nice to see a updated mac mini. I've been eyeing them, however, when I look at the specs it just doesn't seem work it at this point.

The Mini is now two generations behind. I'm hoping (see last paragraph of this blog post) for an updated mini with NVIDEA 9400 and mini-DisplayPort (and, dare we hope, Superdrive standard even on the cheapest model) but who know's what Apple will do? They may just let the Mini fade away.

I will sacrifice several motherboards and a soundcard on a pire of IBM keyboards this comming halloween; perhaps then the great god of funky little Macs will hear and send us a saviour!

(p.s. Pretty please?)

You would think Apple would like to have a cheaper option considering the current economy state.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. I really need to upgrade or move on.
