Haswell quad core does not fit in the Mac mini

the reason for no quad core i7 is because they would not fit in apples 45watt tdp case design. The quad core would require a case that can handle 45 watts.

The 2014 models are just stopgaps due to the broadwell delays. In October 2015 you will see quadcore i7 Mac minis.

The "old" 2.6 GHz "Ivy Bridge" CPU had a TDP of 45 W. The mobile Haswell CPUs (including Iris Pro 5200) have a TDP of 47 W.

TDP should always be taken with a grain of salt. Especially Intel's. Whatever TDP they advertise, Haswell has been known (in many cases - no pun intended) to run hotter than Ivy Bridge, at least on higher clock frequencies.

I thought was only true for first generation Haswell, not the refresh.

The Haswell 3.0 GHz CPU is slower than my > 3 years old Sandy Bridge Quad Core @ 2.2 GHz (MBP 17")!

And they call this an upgrade!?

Err, no. I have a 2011 (Sandy Bridge) quad-core Mini that has the same case (with 2 disks) as the new models. This is a 45W TDP CPU, so I doubt there is any good reason why a 47W Haswell part couldn't be made to work.
